UT Demo Details
by Steve Gibson, Sep 13, 1999 7:14am PDTThe Unreal Tournament playable demo is hopefully coming out in the very near future. CliffyB of Epic Games made a post to the GT messageboards with a list of the weapons we can expect in the demo. Thanks UU
Rocket Launcher, Pulse Gun, Shock Rifle, Enforcer/Dual Enforcers, Impact Hammer, and the Translocator MinigunAlso, zero sends word on these details Mark Rein revealed:
The demo/test will have 4 or 5 maps. The plan right now (it is still subject to change) is 3 deathmatch maps, 1 Domination map and one Capture The Flag map. Of course there will be bots and a single player ladder (albeit shortened to the 4/5 levels that come with the demo).

From what I see Q3Test is a great success on-line, I expect more people to keep playing it than UT. Then when Quake3 comes out I think (and hope) it will be #1, so that I can still find lots of servers and opponents.
Don\'t worry, there will be plenty of guys playing Q3 and \"owning\" yo stank ass.
A lot of people complain because Quake3 is not original and is too much like the other games. Others complain that it\'s not like QW or not like Quake2, or whatever. Who\'s going to buy the game then? If nobody likes it, why are so many people playing it? The players I see on servers aren\'t newbies for the most part, they\'ve obviously played other games before, and since they downloaded Q3Test they obviously went to to the trouble of getting it and are fairly well informed.
So I think what you read here is not representative of the real \"market\". I think there\'s lots of talented players out there who love Q3Test and who will make Quake3 a great success, not just played by id-hating llamas like Unreal is.
it will be a miracal if the demo is out b4 the 18th..
on the 18th doesnt count...
b4 the 18th...
the quake weapons are tried and true weapons..
since DooM
SSG has proven to be effective..
and the Rocket Launcher
And the PlasmaGun/hyperblaster
UT might suck..
and it might not..
if the netcode is as solid as quake3\'s then q3 and Ut are gona be bought at the same time..
if its netcode blows..
then there is no hope for it..
but q3 is just an engine that im sick of. Mods however will make the weapons and everything else cool. does that make sense? you never know how tired you are till you start typing your thoughts :)
Rocketlauncher=same as unreals 8-ball gun just renamed to rocketlauncher
Shockrifle=railgun.. sortof but its alternate is a slow firing slower moving projectile
Pulse gun=plasmagun and lightning gun with alternate
Impact hammer=melee weapon plus you can \'impact jump\' with it.
Translocator=like a grapple but not really
Also the weapons in the demo are only just over half the weapons that UT has.
Who else here remembers when Prey shots were released at about the same time as Unreal shots and--get this--Quake 1 shots... Yes, that\'s right, Prey was slated to compete with Quake... Back in the days before 3d cards, and before URLs were everywhere... Before the internet was big... Back in 1995!!!
Some would argue DooM/2 was the best multiplayer experiance they\'ve had...
duke would stick a pipe bomb up their asses, then go bang some strippers.
\"shake it baby\"
And I\'m not even gonna get in on the whole UT vs. Q3 flamewar this time =P

It is just that the game does not appeal to me in anyway, is it just because there is too much pick in the game? or is it because I just do not like oversimplify gameplay? I do not know.
Will I like UT? I don\'t know. I just hope it takes full advantage of Q3\'s weeknesses.
And to all you hard core wanabies (attn:#4), playing a \"quake\" game does NOT make you hardcore.
the \"rocket launcher\" sticks out like a sore thumb in that list...im just pissed they dropped the \"hypoacclerated ion demagnitizing mass exploding wakatuki\"...
Rocket Launcher = Um...Rocket Launcher, maybe?
Pulse Gun = Plasma Gun, I\'m guessing...
Shock Rifle = Railgun
Enforcer/Dual Enforcers = Pistols, renamed
Impact Hammer = Gauntlet
Translocator Minigun = Minigun.
So, basically, nobody can bash Q3\'s lack of originality anymore, can they? Well, I suppose not including \"Dominance\" matches makes them unoriginal, right? :P
And let me say: I\'m not knocking UT, I\'m just defending Q3.
#3 & #2: I guess that id are the only ones eligble to use a rocket launcher since they \'invented\' it, right? It\'s not like it\'s been in every damn Quake version so far? Actually, although the tried and true method is somewhat of an id trademark (yes even the arena approach is more or less tried and true because DM is what id truly excels in) I must say that id has so far been the least imaginative of all the developers. Shotguns, RL\'s and machineguns in one way or another throughout the series (and even in Wolfenstein and Doom). I agree that pretty much all the weapons in Unreal sucks but Epic at least tried to change them. Just look at id\'s try with the Hyperblaster and how miserably it worked upon release. How many \'hardcore gamers\' use it today? In the end it really doesn\'t matter if a game still use the same old weapons as long as they\'re well done and fun to play with. I love the Q3 shotgun but loathe the shaft for instance.
And for what it\'s worth, the translocator is a teleporting device and the minigun is just that, a minigun ( lookie here for a shot of it in action: http://www.unrealtournament.net/gallery/a3_large.htm ).
