Unreal 2 Preview

by Maarten Goldstein, Aug 08, 2001 7:16pm PDT

There's a new Unreal 2 preview on Gamespot tonight. There was some Infogrames press day where the Legend game was shown. The author pretty much gives a run down of what was shown in the press demo, with info on creatures, weapons, missions and more

As such, Unreal II will have some gaming conventions that people don't really associate with action games--conventions like text trees, for example. But Unreal II won't be an adventure game in any sense of the word. Powers said that the varied missions will include stealth-based levels, hostage rescue, bomb defusal, and squad-based combat. Some levels will even force you to defend a base from oncoming attackers by manning different stationary weapons and giving out orders to other marines to do the same. And while Unreal II will largely be a single-player game, it will have a sizeable multiplayer component. In addition to deathmatch and capture-the-flag maps, Unreal II will have a mode called expanded multiplayer or XMP
PC.IGN also has some impressions.

Since Q1 Ive been hooked to a faster sort of gameplay... Nowadays Im trying to sort of ... "educate" myself into slower styles... eg, Wheel of Time. I've just started playing it (yes, I know its been around a while) and while its WAY slow (not performance, but the game) I do like it as the storyline is thicker than fog in a meadow:-))

One thing thats cool is, both major FPS houses are going to release single players which are going to rock... It'll be interesting to see what stuff they have picked up, in terms of what we the gamers are after...

  • How anyone can compare this to the next Doom is beyond me. They games are going to exist in two completely different time frames (at least a year apart) and will target completely different hardware specs! It's like comparing Doom I to Wolf3d.

The game looks to be a good sequel to a very good original. For those complaining that it is still the unreal engine and will have the same graphics as UT, don't forget that the Unreal engine is constantly evolving and this game is using the newest technology.

I look forward to playing it, and I look forward to playing Doom 3.
