Intel's AMD Battle

After rumors of the introduction of the 2Ghz Pentium 4, as well as hefty price cuts, Intel has now done some talking of its own. Intel VP Anand Chandrasekher pretty much all but confirmed the rumors, saying Intel will start pushing the P4 more aggressively and getting a 500Mhz lead over AMD by the end of August. Intel will also beef up the Celeron processor.

The sad part is they need a 500mhz lead just to offer comparable performance. I'm sure the P4 is a superior design, though...I read that on some Intel propaganda I think.

On second thought the really scary part is that it looks like Intel has finally realized they lost the performance crown some time ago, and are now turning price wars to beat down AMD. Unfortunately Intel has a lot more cash to burn than AMD and can easily put a serious hurt on AMD. They will be (and have been) taking damage in the short term using this approach, but long term they are almost guaranteed to win. Perhaps not from a technological standpoint, but certainly from an economic stance, and any benefit contained in an AMD chip will be a moot point after Intel forces them to operate at a loss for a year or two.

    Ah capitalism, our old friend.

And some people actually question it's practice!
