People have faulted Epic's strategy of building the Unreal engine incrementally over time, as opposed to Id's strategy of rewriting the engine from scratch for each new version.

Id's strategy has been used to produce the cleanest, fastest engines to date. I think that Epic's strategy is allowing them to focus on more high-level tools and concepts now, and is going to pay off really well. It's a long-term strategy that is now finally reaching the long-term where the payoff becomes evident.
