Deus Ex 2 Preview
by Maarten Goldstein, Jul 14, 2001 7:13am PDTAh yes some good old speculation of this Saturday morning. PC.IGN is featuring a Deus Ex 2 preview, mainly taking a lot of guesses about this upcoming ION Austin game, and not containing much new info. There are several concept art images you can check out too, of planned weapons/locations/weapons.
As you'd expect the team is frustratingly tight-lipped about the story in Deus Ex 2. We do know that the story picks up where the previous game left off. Or at least in that general vicinity -- we're not sure which of the game's three endings the sequel will branch from. Writer Sheldon Pacotti again provides the dialogue and much of the scripting for the game (although the designers themselves are very involved in crafting the overall shape of the story). You'll be able to reprise your role as J.C. Denton in the sequel or adopt the distaff option. That's right, distaff. That just means you can also play as a woman this time around. What would you like to see happen in Deus Ex 2?

It would be interesting to see someone make a game like Deus Ex, but make it incorporate a COOP mode, so you and a buddy could play through an intricate storyline together over a LAN or broadband net connection. Coop play is so frickin neglected, and IMO, a single player game like Deus Ex could be adapted to cooperative play.

The first time was in New York, where the player must set up a transmitter on the NSF roof or something. After I'd done that, nothing happened. I was supposed to get a message from Walton Simons, but nothing happened. The guards, however, were eager to kill me (as they should), but then when I went to Paul's apartment he wasn't even there. I tried to redo this mission a couple of times but I never got any message from Simons, and after I'd finished the mission it was still there under "primary goals"; however, at least Paul was at his apartment after a couple of tries. This same bug occurred also on the boat the player's supposed to blow up in Hong Kong, and one other time (I don't remember where exactly now, though). Mildly frustrating. Did anyone else experience this bug?

Personally I liked Deus Ex a LOT. Of course given my teenager attn span, I got bored with its longevity, however I finished it still. Wonder what ending they are gonna branch off of? Should be interesting whichever scenario they continue.
Oh btw I'd like some higher detail models with a few more polys.
I would like faster loading times, but the new engine should help that.
And I would like for the auto-save to actually save your game. Remember when you would enter a new level, it would say "Saving" then "Loading?" I relied on that "saving" the first time I went through the game. After the first death (which actually took awhile) I went to load the last level only to find an empty screen where all those saves should've been. Now I quick save every new level I get into, and that's a pain.
I also would like room for more augs. I wanted so many augs that occupy the same slot in Deus Ex, but I had to sacrifice. I know that's part of the game, and I respect that, but nonetheless - I still want it.
Other than those (unless I think of some more) I want DE2 to be very very close to the original. Everything was done perfectly in my opinion, and if they can replicate that in a sequel, hats off to them.
