Max Payne @ Shack
by Steve Gibson, Jul 14, 2001 12:19am PDTAs promised here is my hands-on preview of Max Payne after visiting 3D Realms last week. If you havent heard yet the game should be going gold and showing up on shelves probably within a month. Not much more to say, here's the obligatory quote of myself and a uh.. link.
No jump puzzles. Also sadly, no monster trucks. Max Payne is played from a 3rd person perspective with a locked camera most of the time. The pivot point of the camera appears to be a point between the camera and the player instead of the way most 3rd person style games are. (Pivot at the player point) The subtle difference makes a FPS player feel a little bit more at home as the movements are a little less disorienting. [snip]

3DR gets more money from the sale if you preorder directly from them than they would if you bought it at a store. They FedEx and you get a free mousepad www.3drealms.com

Competent as it was, though, the review didn't motivate me to buy Max Payne. The game's visuals just aren't that eye-catching -- the grand daddy of this genre, Kingpin, looked richer, more varied, and more menacing, and I would expect Payne to have gone far beyond Kingpin, which it hasn't. So far the game media looks fairly bland, only jazzed by gimmicks like "bullet time." Might try a demo, maybe, but Payne seems like a non-event being hyped much more than it deserves.
Playing through Undying right now, ton of fun. One of the amazing differences between Undying and most PC games is the contribution of a first rate author. Unlike the stupid "story" that usually goes with PC games, this one is engrossing and mood-heightening. I couldn't give two farts about what a game company thinks passes for a narrative. Hire more people of the calibre of Clive Barker!

Nice review, I'm not pre-ordering but I will pick it up when it hits the store.
I think that I'd prefer to have naked chicks showing up at my door telling me I won 10million dollars holding a copy of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire but I will settle for a new action game. :)
* I WILL NOT BUY THIS GAME'D *

I just think it's crappy that they'd not include multiplayer, that's mostly what killed it for me. I don't know, maybe the demo will change my mind (I doubt it though).
