Brian Hook's New Thing
by Maarten Goldstein, Jul 12, 2001 1:52pm PDTInside Mac Games is reporting that Brian Hook is starting his own game company called Pyrogon, which will focus on "original games development targeting the untapped or overlooked segments of the game market.". Brian previously worked at 3dfx, id and Verant. Thanks Blues'.

I never liked those games and they were not fun. Lemmings and Comanche were novelties. Fun for a few minutes, but not fun for months and years like the games I play.
"These are genres that are just waiting to be resurrected again."
I'm going to have to disagree with you there Brian. Your headed for the $20 bargain bin if you think so.
Everytime I go to Best Buy, they have stacks of games on tables and shelfs overflowing with games that they couldn't even give away, let alone sell them. If they were like, "Here, you want this free copy of SWAT2?". I'd be like "No", and keep walking. They must have had 30 copies of that game spilling out onto the floor last time I was there.
I'd really like to see Apple just go away. They fragment the market and waste time and resources. Just let them go out of business so we can "focus" on the x86 PC platform.
It's bad enough already with the win/linux split. Which one do I want to use? Oh I don't know, I think I'll install both and duel boot.. Not!

I'm paraphrasing here but I recall him having said "This way I can do more work myself too. Not that I'm lazy but it's kind of hard to spend an hour working on something myself when I can just as easily walk over to Carmacks office and ask him for a solution that he comes up with in 5 minutes. Yes folks he really is that good."
Of course I guess I'm a Carmack worshiper so I guess I would be drawn to that quote...

Gotta disagree with that. Compared to books, magazines, Cds, videos, movies, I think games offer excellent amount of money with both a lot playing for your cash, and often a pretty immersive experience too. That's not even taking into account multiplayer, user addons, internet communities, which usually come free and hugely extend the value for money.
As for games people might not even like, that's what demos and reviews are for (again, demos being a uniquely informative way to get a prior taste of a media product).
P.S. I really liked Lemmings....until I played Quake, that is :P.

Last time I remember seeing him in his ask hook column on ve3d (probably over a year ago), he was saying he was working on a top secret project at Verant. I'm guessing it was planetside. I haven't really payed attention to what he was doing, nor should I...
