RavenBlade & Metroid?
by Steve Gibson, Jul 12, 2001 8:44am PDTThe guys at IGN sure seem to love Retro Studios. (Note to Jack: STOP READING!) A recent story is pointing to some alleged troubles at the development house currently working on a RPG'ish game titled RavenBlade and the latest Metroid sequel called Metroid Prime. A while back IGN ran some stories about projects being canned which did in fact contain a bit of truth but was wrapped in embellishments.
Meanwhile, two separate insiders have come forth to IGNcube with claims that they have actually seen a running version of a recent Metroid Prime build, both with discouraging impressions. "From what I saw, there was a lot of uninspired, formulaic shooting through 3D hallways.Generally speaking everyone in the industry is really curious as to what Metroid Prime is going to turn out like. People thought the FPS genre was going nowhere until Half-Life came along and it feels like we're in that situation again. Everyone pissing and moaning about how every FPS is nothing new... I certainly have some real doubts about recreating the classic Metroid gameplay in a FPS game but if they manage to recreate the atmosphere and make it a fun game, who the hell cares if it's a side shooter or FPS. update Jack - Well after this, maybe I should start posting fatbabies stories on shack...

This stupid 2D Vs. 3D shit has got to go, though. So what if its in 3d???? At least they're doing something new! I mean, they could make a Metroid NES clone for the gamecube, but what's the point?
What was the last platformer that sold extremely well that wasn't a gameboy or gba game? This is an honest question, because I don't think there have been any for a while. We, as gamers, have become accustomed to demanding a VERY high level of graphics. If Nintendo doesn't deliver it, Gamecube will fail. Therefore, a 3D game fits the market perfectly.

Ya know what? I can look at any game 6 months before it ships and say uninspired things about it.
You can't judge, and certainly should not report on games that aren't done!

When a suck-up giant like IGN dishes some dirt, it's a bit surprising; the whole point of IGN is to pull in industry dollars in the form of ads and turn out easily digestible promo pieces for 12-year olds in return. You don't have to be a genius to understand those rules. So I can well understand why Retro Studios would be pissed off. It's like, wtf? Why us, when IGN doesn't piss on anyone else's game in development?
As for Fat Babies, hell, it's a very funny site (unless, of course, they're spinning some rumors about you). I'm amazed it hasn't been sued out of existence, since it's essentially a libel factory.

You can go ahead and tell us if there's no truth at all to this story, but casting aspersions on the source's credibility without addressing the content just convinces me that the story is at least partially true.
I could imagine that you can't go into specifics, but if the story was a total fabrication with no elements of truth, I don't see why you couldn't at least say so.
I dont know how either of them did sales wise, which is what steve could mean.
I'll be all about the GameCube if people get their shit together and put out some real console games for it, like platformers and side-scrolling space shooters (Do I hear an Einhander 2, Square? PLEASE?!). If it all it gets are help-me-I'm-in-3D tragedies like this, then fuck it.
