Star Wars Galaxies Preview
by Maarten Goldstein, Jul 03, 2001 7:00am PDTPC Zone has posted a preview of Verant's Star Wars MMORPG Galaxies (thanks Blues News). There's plenty of info about the title through quotes from the developers. Really want to play this one.
'You can train your character in a particular way,' says Raph Koster, creative director at Verant. 'You could be a smuggler, and when you get bored, you can give up those skills and try something else.' Basing character profession on skills means that players can literally be whatever they want: bounty hunter, smuggler, mechanic, craftsman, even oyster farmer, writer, musician, bartender or hairdresser. And, unlike traditional RPGs, race will have no restrictions on what skills you choose to pursue.

Anyway, only time can tell if they can balance it right and [dork talk] it's probably be as hard to balance than the Force itself [/dork talk].
For examples look at Ultima Online, and Asherons Call. Both skill based system that has 40% of the player base as tank/mages while the other 40% are mage/tanks. (the other 20% of the population clueless and perpetually low level)
Seen it happen on tons of Pen and Paper RPGs and dozens of MUDs. Purely skill based is for the birds.
Now I'm not saying this wont still be a good game, I'm sure it will, it's just not going to provide the variety and character depth that a class based game will have. EQ for example, where every class is different from the next and they all have different playstyles and skills and have to be learned and mastered. Thats replayability and depth through a class based system, the kind of replayability and depth that is hard to come by in a skill based system. Good luck with this one.
Of course I still think EQ sucks because of all the damned downtime and tedium, but their class and skill system is excellent.

Anyway, I'm going to get this game I think, I just want to be a cook, the best cook in all of Jawa-dom. I'll fry up leeches, snails and those nasty things Jabba the Hut was eating in RotJ with garlic and onion. Hell, I'll make a frittata out of em!
