GBA Owners READ THIS
by Steve Gibson, Jun 20, 2001 7:11am PDTIf you picked up a GameBoy Advance you'll absolutely want to check this story out. There is a contrast control hidden on the back behind the sticker! I tried this out last night and it makes a world of difference. Don't kill us if your GBA dies though.

Thats right just checked my email and nintendo has responded to me emailing them about the wondeful little hole found yesterday...here it is
"Hi!
The adjustment screw that you're talking about is the flicker
adjustment. Although it seems to affect the screen brightness, it's really
there to match the screen's chips timing to the timing of the display chips
on the Game Boy Advance main printed circuit board. This setting is
adjusted to optimum using a special cartridge called a flicker cartridge
under a special light. Adjusting the flicker setting from optimum won't
hurt the Game Boy Advance, but on certain games will cause the screen
to rapidly flicker (a very annoying effect). We recommend against
readjusting the flicker setting from the optimum factory setting. The
adjustment screw is much too tight to change during shipping or use. In
fact, many of the systems that are returned to us for repairs are due to
people trying to readjust the flicker setting using the wrong tools. A
special ceramic screwdriver, flicker cartridge and special light are
required to set the flicker back to its optimal setting.

When someone says its for use with authorized dealers only....that makes it sound like an authorized dealer is some 210IQ genius who only understands the complex inner workings of a screw and what it does to a toy (that is what a GBA is right - a toy?). If you change your PC parts, you pretty much have the IQ to mess with a screw I'm guessing.
Has anyone freaked out lately over adjusting your monitors brightness knob? I mean, it IS a knob - who knows what a KNOB could do? It may destroy my PC if I tweak it left or right. (oh, and my PC only costs about ten times as much as a GBA).
I wish I had a GBA so I could take it apart and find out what this magic screw really does (I don't want Puff the magic dragon appearing if I turn it too far).
Let's get some *real* answers to this life's mystery!

"allright i gotta it back to normal but now ive screwed my gba over forever *sigh* anyone who has messed with the screw has probobly done the same. put in a game and then shake the gba kinda...everytime you shake it it will cause the screen to fade (probobly cause the screw is a little loose and is moving around a little) so know everytime i move my gba (no matter how bright or dark it is) it fades."

Steve tell us in a week if everything is still fine. Also how much did you tweak it?
Also this voids those extended warrenties from bestbuy in case you think your safe...
(a) produce a feature which doesn't work right
(b) hide it
(c) let users "discover it"
(d) give them the choice between voiding their warranty, and having a better visual display
(e) let them buy a new one when they burn their screen out
People never flame nVidia for "leaked drivers" not working right, because they feel that they got some kind of privledged access.
If you flip it all around, and change the next to "beta drivers" or in the case of the GBA, just make that sticker a little less wide, and the public perception totally changes.
Silly humans.
