Q3 Release in "Day or so"

Meant to ping the id Software guys myself about this but been kinda forgetful wrapped up in moving and taking a roadtrip and this damned GBA. At any rate word from Robert Duffy (Thanks Stomped) is that the new beta release of Quake3 will be out "within a day or so barring us finding anything major" which is good news. The new release includes quite a few things of note. Here's a list from a Duffy .plan update from a little while ago:

- net traffic is now being compressed at about 4:1, this should make a huge difference for modem players. - substantial FPS boost for most people and there are a bunch of fixes/tweaks in place - auto update system for future releases - UI stuff release for mod teams [snip]

Wasn't Steve saying a while back that certain jumps in Q3 can only be made if you have some obscene FPS like 110? I'm in an argument with a guy who claims that 30 fps is good enough and I need evidence to set em straight.

But I wonder, has anyone there actually TESTED this on a real modem connection? Because Q3 Retail certainly wasn't. (They talked about "simulating modem conditions" on their LAN. Um, ok. Hey guys, it really isn't that hard to test your code on actual modems!!)

Define "huge difference," does that mean it'll actually be playable for modem users now? Man, I stuck Q3 in a drawer months ago due to being tired of playing bots. If this fixes this, then maybe there'll be hope with the Doom 3 engine (even though MP will be secondary)

There have been a lot of changes and stuff and we are also working toward our first internal DOOM deadline but we are pushing to get the PR out ASAP.

you know, ive read that compressing net traffic can add significant latency - not only due to the time needed to decompress, but because some compression schemes would have the receiver wait until a certain amount of data came in before it could decompress it.

we'll see how it does, but given the way patches work, im guessing it wont be a friggen miracle.

hell look at the HL net code that was supposed to be so spectacular. some ppl like it, others dont, but it certainly isnt the holy grail of net code like people tried to make it seem before release.
