1.8Ghz P4 on July 2
by Maarten Goldstein, Jun 18, 2001 6:40am PDTAccording to the folks at The Register, Intel will be releasing a 1.8Ghz version of the Pentium 4 real soon. Real soon as in July 2. But will it actually be faster than an AMD processor? Heh.

Wonder why so much talk is made of "optimizing" for the P4? Granted, it's partially because of new instructions but it's also because the chip has no on-board code optimizer. That's a standard component for the past several CPU generations but Intel left it out because they were in a hurry to release the PoS4, with AMD putting the pressure on.
This myth about TBirds being unstable continues to propogate but it's absolute crap. It WAS true of the K6 series. After that, things changed. I have a 1.33GHz TBird overclocked to 1.533GHz on an FIC AD11 MB, 256MB PC2400 Micron DDR, GeForce2 Ultra 64MB DDR, and guess what? It's ROCK solid and has NO competition for speed. I didn't buy the AMD because of the price... if I were worried about that, I wouldn't have spent $409 on a video card.
I read for weeks on what the hardware pro's had to say about the TBird vs P4 and it left me with no doubt that the P4 is crap. Pure, absolute crap.
It's easy to tell who has done their homework and who talks out of their ass on this subject but like I said, whatever...

Or actually it could be the fact that they have a 266 mhz bus that no one can use to its full potential because the ram is not standardized, plus their flagship attribute is 3dnow, which requires propriatery code which bogs down the development process and only minutley helps *if at all*, or it could be that they are inconsistent in fpu precision, or overheats extremely easily under prisitine ventilation. It could also be the fact that, they base its technology on standards, and attempts to tweak them. Well...tweaking may be well and dandy, but it does lead to instability, which leads to crap outs w/in software. AMD's problems could also be b/c it is a crap chip from a crap company who has made crap chips in the past *any one remember the k63? hah hah hah hah* and will continue to make crap chips in the future.
I have tried to give AMD a fair shake...i have tried a few of their chips and have had nothing but grief every time. It is for this reason i will remain faithful to intel. Once AMD decides to create a product not merely a tweak out of existing technology, but a new step in the technology market.
I am not impressed with what i have seen by this company, but do look forward to see them competeing w/intel to keep the big I's prices in check, and to welcome NEW technology they put out that is truly new.

Yeah, I want DDR, 266FSB, ATA100, and a chip that makes the lights dim when I click the power on. But shit, the second I do they're gonna come out with a 366MhzFSB and a slightly optimized core. (Hey! It runs 4 to 16% faster than a similarly clocked T-Bird! Yippee!!!)
And we'll still be left with a shitty chipset on the MB.
Granted, I own an AMD T-bird. It hasn't crashed *much*. Fact, I'd place 99.9% of the blame for any of my system's deficiencies on the crappy VIA chipset, but also blame AMD for not making a native chipset of thier own. Oh yeah, the 761 chipset, but as I understand it they're not going to make it full swing. What kind of a chip maker doesn't even want to support thier own chips?
I'm gonna go take my frustrations out on the neighbor's dog. In the meantime, I'd suggest you guys hold out for an upgrade until 64bit processors hit the market. If you can.
There do I fit in now?
