TombRaider Today
by Steve Gibson, Jun 15, 2001 7:10am PDTToday marks a glorious day in entertainment. Once again a videogame has bridged the gap to Hollywood. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider is showing in theatres across the US today. My fiancée who is not familiar with the TombRaider games at all liked the previews and wants to see the movie. I imagine the concept of a female lead action hero is appealing. Anyone else going to see it today? Should be interesting to watch how people are rating the movie. Should also be entertaining to see how heavily the movie gets slammed. The more hype a movie gets before release the more impassioned people are to attack it. Human nature at its finest. I think going to a movie with a preconceived notion is probably one of the worst things you can do to ruin an experience. It's kind of hard to avoid at times and is often the fault of the marketers sure... Just show up to the theatre and hope to be entertained. There is more than one formula for a good movie.

This movie yet again proves the theory: never ever ever ever ever make a movie where time travel is part of the plot. This didn't screw it up quite as bad as "Frequency" did, though.

That, and Lara running like mad to get out of the collapsing ice cave at the end.. *drool*
And I LIKED the scene where Lara walked out of the time storm to reverse the thrown knife. Sure, the physics on that would be ALL WRONG, but the scene's setup was just cool.
Now that you've been warned, I think you're ready to see the movie. Or better yet, dont.

Looks like a bell curve centered at say 5-5.25 or so (which seems reasonable), then a bunch of 8-10 votes, and some 0 votes
id guess the bell curve is indicative of how people felt about it, and the 8-10 and 0 votes are largely people who dont know how to vote on a scale of 1-10.
I'm sure there are some boob fanboys in the 8-10 as well.
I wonder if there's a better way to make this kind of rating system so it gives a more meaningful response. I think the 8-10 people are trying to drive the rating up higher than it deserves (and the few 0 votes are probably trying to do the opposite)
if you like or dislike a movie, with this system you might as well vote 10 or 0 just to make your vote count more.

I dunno, How many females liked Barberella, Barb Wire, or Long Kiss Goodnight? (I admit, I LOVE Long Kiss Goodnight, but that was a dope flick, regardless...) I think it was mostly MEN going to see those movies...
Hell, even La Femme Nikita/Point Of No Return...Mostly male audiences...
Maybe The Silence Of The Lambs..Though that was more of a Psychological Thriller, than Action...

This movie sickens me... or rather all the shit surrounding it. I can't go a whole day with out hearing about it at least 20 times. They have literally grouped tombraider with tons of other products. So you actually see a commercial within a commercial. Will this make me go spend my money on it? fuck no... I even stopped watching the nba finals after the first game because they literally bombard you with this shit, shove it down your throat.
This crap make moviegoing ver unfun...

I'm going to go watch it at at 5:20 (matinee prices). I must admit I'm having doubts but I already told the gang I'd go. I'm not expecting much but hopefully its worth $5.75.
