GameSpot has a article on WindowsXP and how the OS will impact gamers. Someone skim through there and find a good reason to use it instead of Win2k?

  • And few gaming peripherals got the separate driver support necessary for them to operate on an OS that wasn't designed to appeal to the consumer market anyway. Microsoft vows that Windows XP will not burden gamers with these kinds of compatibility and performance woes. While Windows XP is based on the same kernel and structure as Windows 2000's, it has been made to accommodate many more consumer software packages and hardware, including games and peripherals.

    =Ok...

Windows XP worked much better with a "clean install" on its own FAT32 or NTFS hard-drive partition or on a hard drive without a previous version of Windows

=You'd better know how to format your HD...

Multitasking... improved... In fact, we formatted a floppy in the background while playing Quake III and never experienced even a single video burp or lost frame

=if you do this while playing Q3A, you'll be ok. Maybe people who download prOn while playing Q3A and UT at the same time will have even better stories.

The latest Nvidia drivers incorporate Windows XP support, and they perform about equally on Windows 98 and XP. On a GeForce3, we achieved 3D WinMark 2000 scores of 8,911 in Windows 98, but that dropped to 8,267 in XP. Quake 3 scores were closer: 153fps in Windows 98 (640x480) and 150 in XP. Even at 1600x1200, Windows 98 gave us 88fps, and XP dropped only to 81.8. Unfortunately, Black & White performance worsened under the new drivers, crashing the system repeatedly.

=lots of new drivers and game patches will be available shortly

It's still a few months away, maybe they'll fix it.
