WTF Is Majestic
by Steve Gibson, Jun 10, 2001 7:11am PDTHere's something to ponder for Sunday. WTF is Majestic? If anyone has ever seen the movie "The Game" you might have little flashbacks. EA is working on this title that involves you not just through your computer but through phone calls and faxes and email etc. It's uh.. crazy. Electronic Arts has posted this behind the scenes article on the project (Thanks Eric) which attempts to describe what is going on here.
It's played in real time. If a character in MAJESTIC says they'll get back to you tomorrow, they will literally call you tomorrow. This pace of gameplay is very different from most games, which operate at an accelerated pace. What's so powerful about this concept is that once we've established that the game can connect with you through devices such as instant messaging or the phone, anytime an IM window pops up or the phone rings it could be from the game. This adds to and builds the sense of anticipation that the user feels, which for MAJESTIC has become a key creative element.Does anyone else think that in order for the game to succeed they are gonna need to have some pretty hefty monthly fees?

1)Don't value their psychological space.
2)Don't value their privacy: in fact, they're willing to pay to have it violated.
3)They live alone or with someone who feels the same way about #1 and #2.
4)They have money burning a hole in their pockets.
5)They would rather have a game intrude on their lives than have their life dependent upon the game's progress (waiting for calls, etc.)
6)They are complete boobs.

I've been involved in it since the beginning (back in April), and it's fun as hell.
I guess it's getting so much press and attention, someone needs to make money off the idea.

But think of this: if you can cancel your participation in the game at any time, don't you think that changes it from a violation into an integration?
One could say the same thing about mobile phones. If I carry a cell phone, at any time someone could interrupt my day and call me. But I can turn that phone off.
I think Majestic is a little scary because this integration/invasion is unpredictable. But maybe that's also part of the excitement. And if you can turn that real-world participation off at any time (say, through a formatted email or something), then I'd consider buying it. But if I get a call from Joe Shmoe NPC in the middle of a business meeting I'll flip my lid.
xakmalice mentions that this seems like the AI puppetmasters/cloudmakers thing. He's right. Check out http://www.cloudmakers.org for more info, btw.

this is all the gaming industry is capable of when it comes to innovation? a live action, nagging version of a hardy boys novel?
bleh. ;p
honestly though, i could get the same kind of enjoyment reading a good book rather than paying $9.95 plus other fees, just so i can be a little more "involved" in the story.

This kinda reminds me of the game going on for Kubrick's/Speilberg's "AI". You know, the one where you gigure out little hints from strange dots in the trailers?
Oh, and I named my machine at work MAJESTIC a while back. weird.

Any bets that they will try to offset costs by using it for market research?
