I got a Lovecraft book at home, and it is such a pain to read I gave up.

The RPG is, as yes4me pointed out, quite different from the majority of the other more popular ones, like AD&D. You seldom fight the monsters and almost never run into the really big ones. Cthulu is asleep at the bottom of the ocean and had he not been, we'd all be dead. That's how powerful these aliens are.
This game, if done properly, should be a lot of fun. The Cthulu mythos is a very interesting one if you disregard some of the nonsense Lovecrafts followers has added to it ('good' gods versus 'evil' gos for instance).
