WW2 Online Screenshots

We posted a story on Tuesday about the going gold of a new massively multiplayer online game called World War 2 online. But we didn't have any screenshots to show you. But here they are to see if it's going to be poo (although of course you can't judge gameplay from screenshots, but just like graphics aren't everything, you're not gonna play a CGA game just because it's fun either).

Meanwhile on Lum the Mad is a report from a beta tester of the game who says the game isnt ready at all yet. Patchware?

Hoss from Rafter's FAQ Update- Mac Specs thread:

While the current macintosh version will *run* on lower end systems, I don't believe that it provides a pleasant gaming experience *at this time*.

I'm working on lowering those requirements. However, there's no gain in me under-reporting the truth of the matter.

Because of its continually-updated nature, you may indeed hear about the mac version requiring less horsepower within the first 30 minutes of "going live". But until that happens, it's my honor-bound duty to tell the truth about current system requirements.

Corn from the environmental sounds thread:

Kimco, yes you can definately hear the approaching footsteps of a crunchy, and as soon as I get a chance to make a couple more changes and additions, you will have to listen very closely (which will be hard due to the explosions, engines, guns and other such battlefield sounds going on) but you will definately be able to hear players moving about.

  • Ok, a few hints.

    Q. Does the terrain "dip" ?
    A. Yes, it has continuous irregularities and is pretty much never flat anywhere except rivers ('natch) and paved areas in towns and cities. This is definately no billiard table world and I have witnessed soldiers in depressions and behind knolls/berms/ridges popping up to cap an opponent and then ducking down again, in areas that from a distance look pretty flat. Sneaky is definately the way to go in this world.

    Q. Wow, there certainly isn't a lot of cover there, is it going to get better ?
    A. Two parts to this answer.
i)- There is a lot more cover than many here seem to be assuming from screenshots. I guess that even when we try to show cover, a static screenshot fails where real live in game action fulfils. Look at the (old, I do apologise, busy on critical oither things, fo easy please ;) front page photo in the World@War Gazette, it managed to hide a Flak 36 88mm AAA gun from the 5 tanks it killed in succesion. Those guns are like 100 times harder to hide than single troopers are. Read the AAR's and look into what they are saying, I have watched enemy tanks AND troops roll by while I hid in long GRASS (yup, GRASS) just a few yards away from them. You have no idea what real fear is from other FPS games you've played, but I guarrentee you, WWIIOL can make you actually adrenalate (?) just lying still. Then you have "hide and seek" in those areas where trees and shrubs and bushes and buildings come into play ... honestly it just flat rocks. On a PII-400/TNT-2model64/384megRAM box, just for another hint.

ii) Yes, it will get better even though it already rocks now. This is the way it was planned. We keep developing it and it gets better and better and better (why you subscribe at $9.99 a month) until we go broke or die. The game is not "finished" at release time (retail box available) that is just the STARTING POINT. It's the (retail box price) vehicle to get you where you want to go. The $9.99 is just gas money. you want to stop the journey, you quit putting in for gas. You still get to keep the car if you decide to revisit the trip later.

    Q. Can you mark on your monitor where the bullets go ?
    A. With what ? You have to aim down the barrel. This only tells you where your gun is pointed at. The bullets themselves go where ballistics dictates, and that is never constant. Gravity, loss of Mv, effective range, gun stability (SMGs dance their rounds all over the place) all affect where the bullets actually HIT. You could, I guess, hack the FE to produce a "dot" in the centre of your gunsight view, but that isn't where the bullets are going to HIT unless you are at the same range you used when you decided where the "dot" goes. The "dot" that works at 50 yards isn't going to work at 25 or 75 yards, get it ?

SMG's are just plain "up close room brooms" and not a lot else. Exactly what they were invented to do too.

OK, I been on this board for 40 mins now and that's 40 mins more than I had to begin with!

See some of you in the game, and if you aren't the "I want everything yesterday and I want it like THIS" <thank you Billy Connolly) then I promise you, it will be a fun summer and thinking of the winter to follow, even funner.
