The Register & New CPUs
by Clay Mitchell, Sep 06, 1999 1:49pm PDTWell, I always take everything I read from The Register with a grain of salt, but hey this sounds pretty cool and it's a slllloooowww news day. here we go:
AMD K8? This reports says that AMD will announce the K8 at next month's Microprocessor Forum. This will be a 64bit chip, and would be out relatively soon after it's announcedment 1.6 Ghz Alpha Chip? They are also reporting that Alpha/Compaq is readying a 1.6 Ghz processor that will for all intents and purposes be obscenely fast. While the effect of this is somewhat mooted by the fact that Microsoft has scrapped the Alpha port for Windows 2000, you can always run Linux :)

I\'d say it\'s probably a safe guess that the K8 will probably be an Athlon Professional with 64-bit capabilities. Remember: the Athlon Professional is the one with cache sizes up to 16MB that run at FULL SPEED.
