Consoles @ E3
by Steve Gibson, May 19, 2001 2:55pm PDTWhen I get home on Sunday night the full write-ups for E3 will start coming in however since a lot of people have been requesting a quick 'run down' of how things have looked so far I figured Saturday afternoon is as good a time as any to share. Here are how the console systems looked:
- Playstation2: Hey some actual cool looking games? Say it aint so! Saw a few titles that may finally make the machine worth while. - X-Box: First impressions were not good. I came to the show expecting MS to kick some butt with all the developer support they have been announcing, they came in a distant 3rd in the console race as far as showing here though. - GameCube: Looking good! No Metroid showing but everything they had looked quality stuff and of course a couple of the typical kiddy games. Nintendo has a good thing going and GameBoy Advance looked pretty cool too.PS2 probably edged out Nintendo in just sheer quantity of titles showing but GameCube is of course like half a year from release still. X-Box was a bit of a disappointment but I'm gonna give them another look later.

There have been titles that have made it worth it since the very launch.
But then again, I've never come to the shack for unbiased news...

It's too bad about Xbox. As much as I dislike MS, I still think the Xbox has the possibility to be a very important console. The built-in HD and broadband support make it the most future proof console out there, and technically, I believe the GC only does a couple of things better than the Xbox(textures, etc).
Nintendo has really suprised me this E3, I didn't really expect them to have such a good showing. I've come to the conclusion that unless Xbox has some very impressive tricks left, I'm going to get a Gamecube. Nintendo is doing what I wish Sega had done at the launch of their Dreamcast, that is, reviving a bunch of their franchises. I've got a PS2, so I don't really need an Xbox for my 'mature' gaming.
It's nice to see Nintendo is still in the game, I just picked a import GBA today, pretty damn cool!

PS2 Been out for almost a year, selling respectable (Not impressive) numbers, the price is coming down and more developers are working on PS2 games (I'm playing Starfighter and Red Faction and the quality has indeed improoved), partnered with AOL so there's going to be a huge push from Sony there
GameCube Nintendo is the MS of the games market, closed, proprietary but sells shitloads of units and they target the GameVube to the Kids meaning that there's a HUGE ASS market for them with Mario and Zelda
Xbox is going to be popula with a segment of the PC crowd, the rest will be bitter because there are less PC games, hardware wise is a PC, software wise is a PC, control wise is a console... Halo or DOA3 are not the kind of games that sells tons of consoles, Mario, Crash Bandicoot or SSX are
Nokia Media Terminal is the dark horse on this race, just announced, mimmicks the Xbox hardware (Supposedly nVidia or ATI are also behind this) it's mainly a webtop box, but Loki announced that it'll run any Linux port of games, Nokia knows mass marketing and it'll be interesting to see how they do in Europe (They will sell, I can assure you guys that) where they have a market that's more volatile and less brand loyal
Interesting times, but we'll see what happens...

WOW! Damn I want one now. It looked as good or better than the NES version. It was really fun to play. I have a few small concerns about the buttons (they felt like they might break after a few million hours of playing ;-) but other than that count me in! =)
Can't wait till they're out

12 X-Box has the same featureset of the Geforce3 , but 2 T+L units. Higher clocked+ 2x the T+L performance =X-Box basically (not exactly because of the memory interface and no AGP bus on X-Box)
