Deus Ex 2 and Thief 3 first on console
by Sander Pilon, May 19, 2001 12:55pm PDTAccording to PC.IGN, some Ion Storm titles (Deus Ex 2 and Thief 3) will be released for consoles first, and then ported to the PC. It is, however, not a marketing decision - but rather an idea of the developers:
The reason behind these changes is apparently developer driven. We were told that because of the particular restraints of the consoles, whether it be RAM, or otherwise, that by programming a game with more restrictions first, it will be easier to open up the games to PCs, which give developers much more freedom, particularly in the RAM department.I haven't really figured out if this is good or bad. The good thing would be that there is simultaneous development for PC and console, which might mean there's a larger budget - and as a result a better game. The bad thing would be that games would not utilize the power of the PC, the faster processors, the higher resolution and the massive amounts of RAM.

Oh Fuck! This Sucks Ass!!!
Can anybody name a good port from console to PC?!?!? I don't think so!!!
If history teaches us something then we know "A port from console to PC == Crap!"
Although I'm a big console gamer I love console games but it's totally different story when it comes to PC gaming. I played all Mario and even Kileak games. I was mesmerized by games like Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy (Hell, I finished Resident Evil under 1.2 hours ). I loved those games so much that when they came out for PC I bought them too and guess what? I wanted to puke. They sucked on PC big time.
The bottom line is: When developers think about the limitations first and then about the game-play then the game will suck on PC.
This is a very bad news for me. Especially because I love Deus Ex. To me Deus Ex is the best FPS/RPG ever but IÂ’m sure itÂ’s not the console type game. IÂ’m with Ion Storm and I hope they will prove me wrong but I highly doubt it. :-(

Here's my prediction: Developers will get over this "console first" mentality when they start looking at the sales figures and general consumer demand, and the final quality of their games. After all, there's no console mod community. It's unfortunate in the meantime that there are quite a few games that will suffer. I'm especially upset about Red Faction, Halo and Deus Ex 2. I have a PS2, but Time Splitters was so frustrating to control, that I'll never get another FPS on a console. The Xbox has nothing prompting me to get it, especially since Halo will get ported. At least we should be happy that they eventaully will be ported to a decent platform, and not abandonded in console limbo.

Alice: most linear, pretentious-adolescent game I've played in a very long time. Absolutely nowhere to explore because, of course, they needed to fit the Q3 engine into the tiny PS2. This wouldn't be a problem if it had been designed for a console first, of course, because then there wouldn't have been anywhere to go AND it would have looked cheap.
MDK2: started out fun, degenerated into jumping puzzles until I became furious and quit. Did it get better? Heh, too bad! I prefer games that don't feel like busy-work. I do enough work at work.
Oni: I actually enjoyed this but most of you guys didn't, so let's call it a miss. Graphics definitely suffered because of the PS2/Mac targetting, though.
Blade of Darkness: lovely graphics but really quite tiresome once you get past that. Some very annoying design decisions, but since this was that team's first game, we can't really say it's the fault of the console though they were designing it for FOUR YEARS...
So console targetting DOES dumb down the game. They say they're going to "enhance it for PC", but what exactly does that mean? They could literally just replace the textures and perhaps the meshes, but the gameplay would still be lame.
OBVIOUSLY it would be better for us if they did the big impressive PC version first and then pared down stuff for the weaker consoles and Macintoshes. But they are in a business and the point is to do less work and generate more money more quickly.
And that's why we will get shafted on this deal.

My poor computer could barely run Thief 2 =(

Not because of the control issue. I think thats minor.
I just see it as being far more limiting on the game.
I mean, what console game has the size, scope and complexity of Deus Ex? UT and Q3 couldn't fit on a console unaltered and in a non-cut down form, so imagine how borked a game like Deus Ex would be?
Worst thing is, I can understand their reasons to a point.
No only would they have a chance to get many more sales, but having the games refined on fixed, weaker hardware heads of the unfortunate problem DX had of being an absolute system beast.

Now that they've stuck the knife in, why don't they twist it by announcing they'll be third person games?

I mean, assuming the gamer will be using a controller rather than a keyboard, I can see Thief 3 working on console without any limitations for the PC version, but I can't quite see Deus Ex 2 without major limitations for both versions... I mean, it's a complex FPS RPG with a LOT of keys. And they're definatly gonna have to ditch the mouse interface.

In order for a port to work properly they would have to redo practically the entire game because the whole thing must be designed differently (physics, control, options, pace everything)
We can just hope that they make both of these for the Xbox, then at least the graphics will be better. Hopefully not PS2 so it won't turn into another Oni (low poly counts to suit the minimum PC requirements (those w/o T&L), and small 32x32 textures to fit in the PS2's incredibly small amount of video memory)
argh

this gets me disapointed...
it also makes me think deus ex 2 is no way on doom3 tech : (

For anyone who has played it, is this true?

I'm not to knowledgable about the engine stuff though. It seems likely that they could still dim it down. But to me, the doom3 engine would be much more suited to the grim and futuristic society of deus ex.
Deus Ex was also the first game that portrayed the future realistically. I realize there will be a place for the walls covered in conduits and various gadgets and ducts, but ultimately (and for the next 100 years or so) the walls should still be regular, flat, drywall or concrete. It should be different for a ship or vehicle, though. Having a world that closely resembles your own makes a game much more believable and thus involves the player much more. Unrealistic worlds make me feel detatched from the world, even though I'm still able to get into it.
I guess we'll see. Deus Ex was a great game, it would be nice if the next one would take up where the other one left off, but replace the engine and performance issues.
I don't know why I decided to type all that, oh well.

I thoroughly enjoyed Deus Ex (never played the thief games) and I don't expect anything less out of these, just because they're for consoles
thats so lame
Deus Ex and Thief fanbases are STRICTLY for PC
you'd think they'd cater to their fans first

plus, since the console platform is static, games developed now are gonna look like ASS by PC standards a few years from now when they are realsesd, as the pc arcitechture will be way ahead of the console that the PC version is to be "ported from"
and you know that by the time it comes to "add PC features" theyre gonna be at the point where they're like "fuck it" and maybe make it higher res -- but you can forget about any real game-play features or any serious graphical revamping
>:(
By targeting a newish console you can make a higher detail game. By the time you release it on a PC later on the base user system will be a bit higher.
