Counter-Strike:CZ Singleplayer
by Steve Gibson, May 15, 2001 6:00am PDTYesterday featured a couple of stories about a Counter-Strike universe project by Rogue Software being canned (Not Counter-Strike2) and then the announcement of Counter-Strike: Condition Zero in the upcoming CGW. Well here's the hook guys, it's not just an expansion pack for Counter-Strike, but an actual single player game set in the "Counter-Strike universe" straight from the official website:
"Keep an eye on E3 for more info about Counter-Strike: Condition Zero -- the new CS single player episode being done in house by Valve, which was just uncovered by Computer Gaming World."Place your bets on a game similar to Rogue Spear then? We'll be on hand at E3 to let you guys know what we see and post any info that becomes available the day of the show (Starting Thursday)

"Wow, I can shell out $30-40 for CS that includes new weapons, maps and models AND play it OFFLINE? SW33T FSCKING DEAL DOOD!"
The engine blows, the whole idea stinks. The minds behind Valve are fucked up. They steal it from a dying company who needs the project to stay alive, then call themselves 'masters'. Maybe masters of milking a shitty engine for four years and producing tons of addons to the public that would serve better as a free download. Get a life, Valve and start making something NEW and get a brain cuz I think you're sucking on the bull's 'udder'.
Dear Valve,
Please stop this nonsense and finish TF2 this century..
please?

All of them seem to hold the same idea that they aren't going to move or respond to sound, only line-of-sight, and that they wont budge until you go so far ahead they have to run to catch up.
If this was Half-Life from the point of view of one of the black ops guys, I MIGHT be interested. If its solo rescuing of hostages or planting/defusing bombs, I MIGHT be interested. If i'm forced to use the same deaf and dumb teammates from HL and opfor, Valve can get stuffed.

I admire valve for their spirit but this is too much. They are now working on 3 titles at the same time and I fear they will sacrifice quality for quantity. They are already working on the overdelayed Team Fortress 2 which will most likely be another Daikatana since the technology will most likely be outdated. Then there is Half Life two which we haven't seen much of but is still a little promising, and now they are developing Counter-Strike in house (Minh Le is probably being hired or something) and on top of all this they are still making patches for TFC and the original HL. Don't get me wrong I absolutely love HL and valve, but finish one project before you start the next. They are going to get all the media into this one and push it and when their next game comes out they will see how bad their sales are since they are trying to do 3 things at once....
sTeve- since you live across the street from a valve employee (walker?) see if you can get an inside scoop to see if they are all working on 1 projecto or they are multitasking...
I hope to god they are hiring outside help cuz man they are digging themselves a huge hole...

How did I manage to post that comment three times when I only hit 'post' once?
I've exceeded the post rate limit! Uhm... yeah I'd fucking say so!!!
Sorry about that.

The multiplayer aspect is one of Counter-Strike's most compelling attrbiutes. Unless the AI is revolutionary, I'm guessing it won't come close to the online experience.
Hell, who knows? It'll probably be a different game altogether.

I remember in an interview Gooseman saying that he would do a sequel differently, with more emphasis on objectives and less on dm.. maybe I was dreaming
Still, single player should be good, I hope I get to be a lone guy fighting among a bunch of soldiers or something, and then maybe some aliens can teleport in and make things really wild!!!

ESPECIALLY when they're impacting the progress of the two titles - you don't know that either
If you just gonna keep make shit up I don't think there's a point to argue with you.

Quake1 = pretty basic boring single player, awsome DM
quake2 = same story really
Quake3 = Brilliant Multiplayer depending on ur tastes, poor single player element
UT = Same as q3a
Unreal = Good single player poor multi
Half life = Brilliant single player poor multiplayer (we're excluding mods remember)
Nolf = Good single player, poor multi
etc etc
Generaly both games dont go together...

This is just a marketing ploy to feed off the tremendous success of the brand. Nothing more.

Besides that, I'm fully willing to pay for the next installment of CS Multiplayer. New guns, new maps and new player class sounds frickin awesome. Hell, I've gotten more fun/playtime out of this free mod than any store bought game I've ever owned. I figure it's time to pony up a few more bucks for Gooseman.

CS has been crippled to allow for all sorts of issues that range from lag to newbies to the point that it's nothing more than a spray and pray. Snipers are shunned, and if they are any good, immediately assumed to be cheaters. Vavle will need to change lots of CS game mechanics to give a single player game a more realistic feeling. Also Killing hostages merely results in the loss of money in CS. For CS:CZ that's going to have to result in mission failure (unless they define "acceptable" losses).
If Valve really wants to pull this off, they will also need to redefine the mission objectives and penalties for failure. Let's face it, Counter-Terrorist and even Terrorist organizations rarely are concerned with immediate money issues for weapon aquisition. So do teams just pick weapons like RS, or do they use the typical HL story line where the more you play, the better weapons you find?
Another area I'll be concerned with is AI. The AI in Opposing forces was decent, but not good enough (imo) to accurately portray the activities needed for a good singleplayer CS. I mean, how often will a bot determine that attacking the flack of a coordinated defense is the best option to break it up. When you add the numorous weapons available in CS, it becomes increasingly complex. Just grenades alone will pose a fit for the AI.
I have no issues with the continued "milking" of the HL engine, it makes good business sense. But I don't think a direct translation to a single player game will work for CS. However, I'm sure this game will sell despite the amount of posts that state otherwise.

So this is going to be a rainbow six knock off?

cool, another tactical warfare simulator. The more the merrier.
I can't play CS because I have a 56k and all the servers that I ping "good" to, suck (400+ ping, baaad)
I am a HUGE fan of Rainbow Six, RogueSpear, Covert Ops, and both expansion packs. I actually just reinstalled RogueSpear this weekend for the hell of it. I love that shit, sneaking around with a small team picking off terrorists, flashbanging rooms, bursting in with a shotgun, taking down 3 and rescuing hostages. I love it.
Same goes for Swat 3, I love that shit, its so fun.
Yes, I think Valve needs to take a break from squeezing the utters of the Half Life cow. Some people's arguement is "well if its making money why not do it?"
They've been teasing us with TF2 for YEARS, yet they keep announcing new shit they're putting out in the HL world. CS is technically theirs because its a mod for their game. I still think its damned cool they're gonna make a singleplayer game out of it, since I'm primarily an SP gamer. But damn, lets get one thing done at a time, okay? I wish they would just finish up TF2 (even if its patchware for chrissake) and move on.
But overall, I'm pretty happy to hear this, since I totally dig tactical sims.
Play that for a week, and raise your expectations for the CS version.

There are some games that are NOT MEANT to be played as single player games. Can you imagine Everquest as single player? Or Ultima as single player?
CS was fuckind designed to be multiplayer, to be played with random, quirky un predictable humans, not some AI enemy
Shit
I will refuse to buy this.
