CPL Changing Gears
by Steve Gibson, May 15, 2001 5:58am PDTSome pretty big news in the CPL scene. They have canned a couple of events in favor of a new format. Instead of holding those $20,000-$30,000 events every month or so they are going to bigass $150,000 minimum prize purse events a couple of times a year along with one charity event each year. That's one hell of a change in plans.
The Cyberathlete Professional League today announced the cancellation of August's Counter-Strike Tournament and October's Quake III Arena Tournament. With the exception of a yearly charity event, the CPL will now only hold a minimum of two large-scale tournaments a year with cash purses of at least $150,000 each. This revised approach to competitive gaming in the United States promises to yield stronger growth for the CPL through consolidated efforts. The CPL World Championship Event will be held on December 6 - December 9, 2001, offering a record-sized tournament cash purse of $150,000 and will accommodate up to 2,100 people [snip]It's also interesting to note that with these latest events being canned the event that many players were looking to as the big last Quake3 tourney has been canned. Although QuakeCon is coming soon and offering a $50,000 cash purse.

I hope 'pro' gaming dies a swift, unmerciful death.

Poorly run, they will not last long.
Even though the whole idea of professional gaming is absurd.

But...doesn't this seem really, really silly?
I mean, people, playing a video game, for hundreds of thousands of dollars?
Why?
Its not a sport to me, since I'm not entertained by watching OTHER people play Quake. The "atheletiscm" in question consists of them basically playing the game all day every day to get good and ditching their jobs.
At what point do you just step back and say "This is fucking ridicolous"?

I am not in a clan and even if I was to join one how the hell do I know they would be playing in this tournament?
Any suggestions?
What are some good clans that I could try out for that are going to be playing in this tournament?
At first I thought that CS in pro gaming was cool but then I just realized that you have to have a team to play. Unlike Q3 where a single player can join the tournament in CS you HAVE to be on a team. Any suggestions???

there is more money than ever going into gaming and these tourneys.
the whole debate over 'can you be a professional gamer as a living?' is just plain silly. who the hell cares? they are tournaments that give away a shitload of money.
the whole pissy match over what the hell you wanna call this is so last-year. does it really need to be named or classified? does some number crunching figuring out only a few guys can make enough to live off prove any real point beyond remedial math skills?
call it whatever the you want, i just enjoy seeing some of the best players in the world fight it out on a lan for high stakes.

funny how the tourny will be during most of the college exams ... gives us old-timers a better chance haha. ;)
This sounds like a smart move. I'd think it would let the CPL keep it in attention better and make a bigger name for themselves, and the gaming.
Not that $20,000 - $30,000 is chump change, what would seem more impressive - gamers competely monthly (for example) for that amount - or a couple of times a year, have a big event, the best of the best, competing for $150,000?
*begins practicing*
