WindowsXP Licensing
by Maarten Goldstein, May 12, 2001 7:02am PDTMore money for The Microsoft, as they are changing their licensing plan for upgrading to OfficeXP. Basically if business customers don't upgrade before October 1, they'll pay pretty much full price afterwards. Nice.

Hmmmmm... how long has it been since he stepped down anyway? Few months? When was XP announced?
Normally I'm against the courts stepping into economic matters, but this is the kind of shit that really needs to stop. Grrr.

Also, we're beta testing XP and out of 10 machines, everyone has requested Office 2000, or even Office 97 back. It's a beta and all, but it is just pure buggy shit....

Star Office. Not as slick as MS Office but good enough for 98% of the people here who use it mostly for homework and writing letters and making flyers for the kegger Saturday night. For that matter MS Works is good enough for most people. But Works won't open Excel spreadsheets on purpose because the greedy bastards want you to pay the tax first. Star Office opens Excel just fine. But if you send .xls files back and forth from the machice with Star Office and a machine with Excel you'll get funny messages with some vague warning about file formats from Excel. Microsoft has been doing this for years. Weak-minded people don't like those messages and are frightened by them so they go out about buy MS Office just to make them go away.
The greed of Microsoft is astounding. Why don't they just go and enjoy their billions and be benevolent dictators. But it's never enough. And things like trying to force customer to pay re-occurring liscense fees instead of allowing them to own the software outright, will fuel the incentive to develope for Linux.
