Paying for Planetside

There are people who wonder about paying for a persistant FPS such as the upcoming PlanetSide. It was asked what makes PS worth paying for on the Planetside forums and Verant's Kevin "StrykerPS" McCann has posted a reply. Thanks VE.

I expect this to fail hard. An FPS designer has to make the case to the public that it should keep paying to play -- and that's a pretty damn hard case to make at the moment. The economy doesn't make the idea very attractive for consumers, and the intended market for this game is being quite happily served by CS and a slew of older games, all of them free. As long as the mod scene exists, stuff like Planetside is a bad proposition.

I think this game is gonna rock.... The screenies look great and the gameplay sounds like it should be well balanced (A little CS, mixed with some tribes). If they get the character advancement stuff right, Planetside would be an ideal game for me.... I like playing MMORPG's, but the action/combat usually sucks and bores me after a while.

bah....it's another Tribes/Halo clone that you'll have to PAY to play. It's fine for stuff like Everquest, where there's a BIG "community" feel to it, and there's different goals. But Planetside seems like another FPS action game, which will have a hard time competing.
