A couple of the larger events to have happened is the release of TRIBES2 on to the scene as well as the exodus of Quake3 players towards Counter-Strike going along with the CPL announcement of supporting CS more. Here's how the numbers are stacking up right now:

1. If you run bots on a Q3 server run 2 Bots on a server with the command to kick a bot when someone joins. So that way You only have a max of one bot to keep people occupied until other people join. If you run 8 bots at a time you are an idiot and no one will ever join your server.
2. WTF people no one has given any Props to Q2!!!! Look at its numbers! No bots! Just 1800 players after how many years??? Where are the Unreal #'s? Just sayin That Q2 Still Rules!!!

Does Diablo 2 having isometric view account for its popularity? Does this say anything to developers of FPS and 3rd person perspective games?
Interestingly, if you add up all the FPS numbers, they nearly equal the numbers of Diablo 2. D2's on top because it doesn't have any real competition. I would guess that Microsoft's upcoming Dungeon Siege will change that.
Also, if these numbers are accurate, there are something like a quarter of a million online gamers (including some untold number of bots) at any given moment. Not many, really.
