The IGN Experiment
by Steve Gibson, Apr 17, 2001 10:32am PDTIGN is making a bold move. They are going to the pay-website model. This isnt the Salon Experiment either. They are calling the new service "IGN Insider". It isnt clear if paying will remove advertisements from their website but they are offering up hot new features for $29.95 a year. Ability to use special messageboard tags and Q&A's with their editors and a few other misc other things. But this is the kicker:
...in the not too distant future, IGN will roll some of its regular features behind the Insider labelI'm not quite sure $30 a year for messageboard tags and a "printable PDF" is exactly a bargain. Maybe if they tossed in DailyRadar's Nintendo coverage!
Daily Filter: XCOM: Enemy Unknown, LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes
Red Orchestra 2 GOTY edition announced
EVE Online 'Inferno' expansion available now
Street Fighter X Tekken crash fix coming in June
Titillating 'Penthouse Pack' hits Saints Row: The Third today

IGN should start collecting money from everyone that downloads a movie, game demo or anything else. That's where the really big costs are.
But this msg board tag stuff is pathetic.

They have to generate income in some way, if not they're dead. So they might as well try this.
I personally would think that about half of that (say, $1.50/month) would be reasonable if you're interested the features they offer. (And the site stays banner-free)

Personally, I want to wish IGN the worst of luck with this scam. It's hard to think of a web publisher in this biz that's more willing to swallow on the first date. Did I saw swallow? Oops, I meant guzzle. ;)

I know Steve's UGO contract wouldn't allow that, but if other people aren't in a similar situation, why not do it?

Their "pay for content" model will fail, just like Salon did.
For 30 bucks a year I'll get a magazine subscription so I can read it while I take a shit and stick with free sites for up to the minute news.

"Mommy I need to pay money to view a website"
"No billy there are plenty out there for free"

Oh, I'm so fucking sold, I'm there man, I'm excited, I'm...
thinking that the people that thought of this are running free on my planet. Maybe I should just shoot myself now and save these fucking idiots the trouble of having to cause me a cardiac arrest.
Here is what I would probably pay like $30-50/year for
a "package" of websites. like shack/hardocp/anandtech/ etc
exclusive coupons or some shit that would give me discounts on games/hardware
giveaways every couple of weeks for members. i could imagine paying for that.
the way i see that i would make the $ back on coupons and all the other stuff, plus i support the sites that i've grown to enjoy.

"
Read a weekly IGN roundtable in which editors heatedly discuss topics."
I get that everyday for free on the shack :)
"
Watch IGN's editors work with a fully-functional in-office video stream -- exclusive to
Insider members. And if you're lucky enough to be viewing as certain pre-planned
events transpire, you could win big prizes. "
Now I'm paying to see out of shape greasy bastards sit at their desks all day and play with their Pikachu dolls? Oh my god he's opening word! THAT IS THE WORST PORN STREAM EVER.
"Check out a weekly IGN comic strip " Well, ok. It has to at least be funnier than Penny Arcade.
"Get access to 'gallery' pages with extra screenshots -- and sometimes exclusive
screenshots to some of the next-generation games on the horizon"
SOMETIMES exclusive? If I pay I better get exclusive shit EVERY GODDAMN DAY. If not, why should I pay?
