KillCreek in Playboy

by Steve Gibson, Sep 02, 1999 2:54pm PDT

Well, rumors have been abounding about a particular Ion Storm employee appearing in a future issue of Playboy. Here's the info I just received, Stevie "KillCreek" Case, level designer at Ion Storm will be featured in an upcoming issue of Playboy magazine to hit stands in a couple of months. She's going to be shooting the photos the 2nd week of October up in Chicago. The "theme" of course will be based around her being a female gamer and developer, and there will be nudity involved. Curious how it happened? Stevie was "discovered" when a Playboy exec spotted her in a LA Times article and they just gave her a call. Wish I had people calling me saying "Hey, wanna get naked?" update: Here is word from Stevie "FYI, Playboy had some test pictures taken before the decided to feature me. Also, the whole deal was set up without the involvement of Ion or Romero. I actually have my own brain and make real life decisions all by myself now! God forbid!! Its just one giant conspiracy! ;-)"

  • Well said, Solarys. You echoed what I have been feeling as well.

I had the same initial reaction. How dare she! But then I thought about it... and why shouldn\'t she? I\'ve said this in other discussions but KillCreek made herself what she is. She is an ambitious person who decided to get into the gaming industry and has done just that.

I am not worried that this decision will hinder female gamers... You make yourself what you are. If KillCreek has anything to do with you excelling as a programmer or an artist or a level designer... then you are letting someone else\'s actions determine your own ambition.

Ambition is what has made KillCreek what she is today. If you don\'t want to be what she is... set your sights elsewhere. And I don\'t mean outside of the gaming industry... I just mean that any opinions people have of her... and any publicity she has gotten has been her own doing.

I had a chance to meet and talk to Anna Kang. After seeing what she did to get her job at id it made me realize that it has a lot less to do with gender and a lot more to do with your willingness to make a name for yourself and fight your way into the industry. That\'s what the guys have to do. They gain the skills to do the job and then they begin the struggle to get noticed.

You want to be a recognized female gamer? Fight for it. You want a job in the gaming industry? Fight for it. Don\'t blame one issue of Playboy for you not making it.

  • Hmm.. Well after reading a few things posted here.. I felt I would give my two cents..

This whole Playboy situation is being blown well out of proportion, IMHO.

What would make people think that KillCreek posing nude will affect females being able to get into the gaming industry? Ion Storm is ONE of MANY companies. True, there are not many women in the game development industy - but this can be said for MOST technologically related industries (as well as a few others). Is KC (or any female engineer/scientist/programmer/etc for that matter) posing affecting my job as a programmer? NO. Do my bosses care? No - they don\'t even know who she is and couldn\'t care less. They only care about the quality and promptness of my work. If you have the drive, and you have the guts to go after something - it won\'t matter.. you dig until you get it - regardless. Someone blaming thier inability to make their dreams come true on KC\'s playboy romp is just a cop out.

To be honest, I was a bit \"upset\" when I first heard the \'news\'. OMG! THE HUMANITY! But then after the initial shock, I realized something - What KillCreek does bears no reflection upon me unless I allow it. And, I won\'t allow it. I have my own mind, my own opinions, and my own decisions - I\'m the only one who determines who I am.

Granted, It isn\'t something that I would do, or that I necessarily approve of for personal reasons. But get this - what I think doesn\'t matter - it\'s her decision and she made it.

True, a few of us will be asked \"Hey when you going to show my your boobs?\" but how is this any different than the treatment most women get on a server anyways? Not much.. Instead of calling you a ****, or a *****, they will ask when you are going to pose in playboy. The melody won\'t change - just the lyrics. I\'ve realized something else as well - who cares what some punk on a server says anyways?

Anywho.. back to my own little world =D

  • Hi all, I\'ve been reading your posts for a while and here are my 5 cents on the subject.

    > I also can\'t help but think this is going to set back female gamers a few years.
    > It\'s taken since the early days of quake to get things where we can go on servers
    > and play without idiots making comments. I wonder if the next time i log onto a
    > server, i\'ll have guys asking me what issue of playboy I\'m gonna be in.

Come on! : ) I completely disagree. I have had problems with lame guys on Quake servers but
I never really made a big deal about the fact that \"I\'m a female gamer!\" My problems have
been minor and most people (guys) are just there to play quake and that\'s the reason why
I\'m there. (Not to flirt, not to rub in the fact that I\'m a girl, etc.) Computer gaming is
cool because unlike basketball or boxing for example, gender is NOT an issue when playing.
Both sexes can do just as well. The media blew the whole \"Female gamer\" thing way out of
proportion. I thought that by now (It\'s been a few years) it would settle down. Personally
I\'d like to see more female gamers actually enter tournaments and place well.

If you want to be equal and you want people to treat you the same, then just try to fit in.
Don\'t go on about how different you are when it doesn\'t matter in the first place. That\'s it.

Breast implants: Insecurity? Come on. Would you be more confident in everyday life if you got
a penis enlargement? It\'s not *wrong* because everyone can, and should, do whatever they feel
like, as long as they don\'t hurt others. But when I see a woman with obviously fake breasts
I tend to feel sorry for her. It\'s sad to me that women do that to themselves to get ahead
    in their career and life.

I would never do anything artificial to my body. Sure I could look better, everyone could, but
I\'m not fixated on looks. Having breast implants attracts the wrong people. Sleazy guys will
be staring at you because they find it attractive to see giant gravity defying orbs on a girl.

Would I pose for Playboy if they paid me? HELL NO! My sexuality and my private parts belong to
me and my boyfriend. I find nothing appealing about being in a sex magazine. They wouldn\'t
want me to be in their magazine either because I\'m not the Playboy type. I\'m happy about that.

I\'m not a prude, though. Erotic pictures can be very cool. But Playboy women are mostly so fake
looking. Just like body building magazines. Are there woman out there who think \"Wow he looks
hot with those giant veins sticking out of his body, what a hunk? Sadly there probably are.

  • To #134 : I don\'t know which issue, but a couple days ago ebay was auctioning that issue off (it was an autographed one too), no clue if it is still there or not.

General Comments: To be perfectly honest, I find most of the people\'s lewd posts in here to be twice as offensive as Stevie actually posing.

With such few women actually in the games industry, I don\'t think being one of the most successful women gamers turn industry employee and being in playboy is something many females who have an interest in working in the games industry appreciate. Ever read the article about the Women of Silicon Valley? And how hard women in any technology high profile industry complain they aren\'t taken seriously because press and men in the industry refuse to look past the issue of female=sexual? It\'s the same case.

While I commend Stevie on making a personal decision she is HAPPY with, I have to ask if she has thought about her career? Sure, she will get hype, but she will also get a lot of negative press out of it as well. If she ever chooses to leave ION or is forced to leave ION if the company doesn\'t survive... is there any other game company out there who prefers to maintain a respectable image going to hire her?

  • I read the first 175 messages here, and It got too samey (is that a word? and is that the correct spelling if it is). I don\'t know KillCreek, I only know about her thru her beating Romero and then working at Ion Storm.

She is an adult and it entilted to do with her life what she wishes. She seems confortable with her body, and obviously other people find her attractive, if she is up for it, and doesnt mind doing it, then she should do it. all this putting her down, saying she is demeaning women game (and female gammers in particular) is just rubbish. If a female actress poses nude, does it harm other female actresses (can you have male actresses :) ) no it doesn\'t. Yes if you appear nude, you must be prepared to accept some \'cheap talk\' about yourself. But you (well I don\'t) expect to here people calling her a slut, etc.
As an aside, I also prefere the natural old style look to her new style look, but it really should be what KillCreek prefers.
