Online Music Partnership
by Maarten Goldstein, Apr 02, 2001 1:17pm PDTLooks like RealNetworks is partnering with the major record labels, who still aren't sure about Napster security. Together with AOL Time Warner, Bertelsmann AG and EMI Group RealNetworks will be creating an online music subscription service, to be launched later this year. You will be able to download the music that you want, but of course, you'll be paying.
"There is this notion that somehow the music companies won't play or don't want to license music for online distribution", said Dick Parsons, co-chief operating officer of AOL Time Warner. "What we were waiting for was someone who would make music available in an appropriate way over the Internet."RealNetworks and Napster might work together on this MusicNet service because of Napster's large community. Not in this deal is Sony, who is creating it's own service Duet, also available later this year. Now they just have to find people who still want to pay for music online..
