GeForce3 Overload
by Maarten Goldstein, Feb 27, 2001 8:50am PSTThe NDA has been lifted and so there will be a lot of NVidia GeForce3 previews today. Full specs, screenshots, explanation of the features and a lot more can be found in all the previews. Also it appears the cards will be around $500 and not $600 as previously mentioned, so that's good although still pricey. Cards should be out by March. For all the previews you can go to: Sharky Extreme, FiringSquad, Tweak3D, Gamespot, 3DGPU, Bjorn3D, Tom's Hardware Guide and HardOCP (let's hope the article actually stays up this time :) ). So, do you need one?
Do we have some reservations about the GeForce3? Sure. Mainly, NVIDIA has already admitted that DirectX 8 games will start emerging around Christmas 2001. Along the same lines, they've reiterated that every six months will see the announcement of a new product, meaning we can expect NV25 in the fall. Do you really want to spend $499 on a card that will mainly offer faster anti-aliasing until Christmas, when DirectX 8 games hit the shelves? Remember, by that time NV25 will be the rage.
