Robin Walker Interview

by Maarten Goldstein, Feb 24, 2001 9:54am PST

PlanetFortress has been featuring a bunch of articles and so forth after a visit to Valve Software. They dont talk about any future products like TF2/HL2 but there is a pretty good quote about how seriously they are taking online cheating in an interview with Robin Walker

We’re getting smarter about our cheat prevention stuff. We’re learning all the time. Every one we fix just makes us smarter. So far, everything that we've really concentrated on, we've been able nail down. So, we’re pretty optimistic. There have been a few that have been there for a while that are kind of tricky, but we have good ideas on how to stop them. I think one thing that sets us apart from most of the other online games is that we consider these important as an error that's causing everyone out there to crash on startup. Cheats are probably the number one way to destroy the community. We really, really want to remove them and so we do everything we can to stop them. They are always going to come out, though, and we'll keep fixing them. Eventually they'll get tired. After all, we’re getting paid to solve these problems, but they're not getting paid to make them.
Ok, now fix the wallhack! :)

  • He's damn well right they're getting better. As far as I can tell, TF2 is 100% cheater-proof right now.

    Unless one could hack vapor.

    Har har.

Speaking as one who has had a pre-order in for TF2 since back when it was a HL add-on, that was what, spring of 1999?, I'm entitled to a little bitterness.

Attn Valve: unless that software comes out of your screen and gives blowjobs, what was "mongo cool" in 1999 and merely "cool" in 2000 may even still be 'mildly interesting' in 2001 will be 'z-z-z-z' in 2002.
I don't know if you noticed, but Counterstrike stole your customers.
(Cynically, does Valve care? They are now making $$ from CS...why bother rushing TF2?)
