Napster Offers $1 Billion
by Maarten Goldstein, Feb 20, 2001 4:57pm PSTIn a last effort to prevent a shutdown, Napster has offered the record companies $1 billion over 5 years to allow the continuation of the file-swapping service. This would give the five major record companies $150 million a year, and an additional $50 million would be shared by independant labels. This money would be generated by the subscription service Napster will be introducing later this year. The response from the RIAA? Negative, as you might've expected
"To the management of Napster I say again: You claim you want to be legitimate and negotiate licenses based on real business models," [RIAA Chief Executive Officer Hillary] Rosen said. "I urge you to act accordingly. Stop the infringements, stop the delay tactics in court, and redouble your efforts to build a legitimate system."

1984 I buy the same album on Vinyl/LP
1994 I buy the same album on CD
Shouldn't i have been able to swicth my MC for a LP my LP for a CD and only paying for the media? I mean, in 1979 i bought "the right" to the music?
If i in 1999 scratch my CD i have to pay full price for a new Unscratched CD..
This is the way the industri works. It's all about money and absolutely not about protecting artists.
If artists had the balls they would sell their own CD's on the web at half the price they cost in the stores and they would make twice as much money.
But they can't, because the stores and their label wouldn't support them anymore. No support=no radio play=noone knows who the fuck they are..

To effectively stop music sharing, the RIAA would have to take down the entire Internet. In the future, it probably won't be some hacker attacking servers; it will be Big Brother.

If they accept this deal, it will just cause a witch hunt for everyone that has a mp3 in their possession. It also will screw a lot of other companies that make mp3 related software, force them to make changes to their programs to suit the RIAA.
By offering a deal like this, they hurt every artist that is using the net to self promote themselves. They hurt sites like mp3.com and others that encourage self promotion.
The RIAA and all record companies are threatened by the net. They see artist getting 100% of the profits and they don't like it.
I don't give a flying fuck about what Napster was letting people do, it was the attention that they brought to the whole mp3 scene and digital audio and self promoting artists. Now all that is ruined with a deal like this.

Ah, Napster.
How shall I thank thee for letting me steal so easily?
I pluck thy fertile musical bush daily, you see.

not that I've ever downloaded an mp3 or anything
im sure they would have no problem with Napster if they thought of it 1st, came up with it, and 100% control over the service.
