Carmack on NVidia
by Maarten Goldstein, Feb 10, 2001 7:32am PSTThere's a comment by John Carmack on /. , replying to the NVidia history article on the FiringSquad. He doesn't agree with the idea that "NV1's quadratic surfaces might have actually been a good thing."

Carmack doesn't write the games, he simply lays the foundations for the rest of the team to build on. Lets not forget that a game will always be limited by the capabilities of its engine. If you have the best engine, you stand a much better chance of producing a good game than if you have a shitty engine.
End of debate.

Yes, but you should have seen their quadriplegic surfaces. Man, those would have changed gaming forever.

What will bother me is if their next game stinks. I hope Doom3 will rock, but if it's missing essentials like Q3 did, I will alter my opinion of id and rely exclusively on gaming reviews from sources that I trust (like PCG - yeah I trust their reviews), before I purchase any more of their games at full price. In other words, I will wait until the price is $19.99 and it's convienient for me.
Having the prettiest 3D graphics is not a replacement for good gameplay and modern features. We as game players demand more! I was disappointed by Q3, largely because the game didn't really seem complete until the release of Team Arena.
Nope, I will drop my id loyalty which I have maintained for years now, in favor of other game developers that *consistantly* produce complete products.
Carmack can flaunt his technical knowledge all day long on Slash Dot, and push the 3D card makers to produce next-gen technology, but if he can't make a 'Game Of The Year' product, what good is he to us game players?
Thanks!

I give the whole company at Ion Storm a lot of credit for working under the pile of horseshit that Romero shoveled over them with the whole Daikatana debacle, to prove at least in the end that they could produce an excellent game.
