AOL Sweatshops
by Steve Gibson, Feb 08, 2001 2:56am PSTWho woulda thunk it, AOL running a 'cyber sweatshop'. Ok not exactly but after a 3 month investigation it looks like AOL is catching some flack. (Thanks Tech-Report) It seems that if your volunteers do too much work they need to be paid.
Greenberg says that under federal labor guidelines, AOL volunteers should be paid at least minimum wage and should be paid in cash. If he is right, the economic implications are staggering. Using the most conservative figures, if America Online had been forced to pay these volunteers in cash, it would not have shown a profit until fiscal year 1999-seven years later than it actually did. In all, since 1992, it would have had to spend nearly $1 billion in wages, or $166 million (see table) in the recently concluded fiscal year, an analysis of AOL's own financial records shows. So now I'm wondering, what about all those people who moderate on Slashdot?
Daily Filter: Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Future Soldier, Dust 514
DmC: Devil May Cry delayed to 2013, coming to PC
Bungie's 'Destiny' exclusive to Xbox, launching in 2013, original Activision contract shows
007 Legends, Infinity Blade 2 - Shacknews Daily - May 21, 2012

AOL = Giving people the "opportunity" to volunteer for a major ISP
PQ = Giving people the "opportunity" to volunteer for a major online community
AOL = Doesn't pay volunteers and says they can quit if they don't like it knowing people won't.

I think that this is a bad precident because it eliminates your own choice to do stuff. About 90% of the content here on the shack is from people posting comments. So, we're creating 90% of the value of the site.
Steve, I think you owe us all money for our hard work.
