Xian's Poll
by Steve Gibson, Jan 30, 2001 7:25am PSTChristian Antkow made a .plan update yesterday evening posting a poll on the Shack Quake3 Messageboard. (Which we'll be migrating onto the Shack server, its currently off-site). If leaving the Shack makes you antsy, I've posted the same poll here as well. Look to your right! Here's the intro by Xian:
Does your gaming system have a "permanent" connection to the internet, despite the fact that a game you are playing doesn't need access to the internet? You know what that means right?! It'd DOOM news! He's making plans for DOOM! Cant you tell!? This is huge! Eh.. could be anything. Oh yeah, I'll hassle Jack and Andy to see if we can get comments attached to the polls sooner or later.

Distributed Persistant-World Online Doom with COOP/RPG elements.
Now for the reasons why:
1) Persistant online games are the future of popular (read big money) gaming. See examples such as Ultima Online and Everquest.
2) Carmack likes new better tech. With more and more net users using persistant online boardband connections to the net, the practicality of distributed networking for a consumer piece of software has increased drastically. What are the negatives of Everquest and Ultima Online? Monthly fees, too much control of the parent company (Sony is a good example), and the main servers going down means no gaming until they are up again. With distributed networking, Carmack and crew realize that there is no need for an expensive central server, so monthly service fees which are used to pay for the expensive central servers would not exist. If the gamers run the game, Id Software couldn't destroy someone's gaming character, so distributed networking (if done right), removes the possibility of power abuse. Distributed networks, if designed correctly, can be a far more reliable foundation for online games. With Everquest type of system, if the server goes down, EVERYONE is fucked! With a distributed network, if one computer goes down, the person playing on the computer that went down is fucked and maybe a few other people, but not the entire world of people.... the distributed network would compensate for the sudden loss of a node through the use of redundency of data and network connections.
Last, but not least, with a distributed network for a game, you could setup the persistant online game inside your own intranet (Everquest lan parties!!!), and if Id Software ever goes bankrupt or disappears from some reason, we can still play the game. In the case of Everquest, if the parent company goes under... Everyquest is dead.

And thanks to the people who supported me (or those not necessarily supporting me, but against xian's abuse of powers).

CS is now accepted by Steve, and is more shack friendly now a days. Does this mean Gooseman could get nuke privileges too? Then he could take care of the fanboys when something bad is said about his mod. Seems fair...
I'm sure we would never see any nukes if the ad views also disappeared when a person got nuked.

I noticed you said the shack messageboard will be migrated to the shack server. When? And if so, will you grace us with a post every now and then? You avoid it like the plague now; is that because it's off site or what?

Couldn't he just have asked:
"1. Do you have dialup or a permanent connection to the internet on your graming system?
2. What speed does it have?"
