Ouch, another big website going down due to the crunch. Probably the most popular gaming website for the 'scene' over there in Europe, BarrysWorld has announced that they are closing up shop. The turmoil continues.

BarrysWorld has announced that it is to close its websites and game servers on 5 February. See our news page at http://www.barrysworld.com/news/ for more info and links to the press releases. Its been a fun four years and we have enjoyed getting involved in all areas of the community from the UK`s largest fps leagues to game reviews and news, to the free provision of a few hundred free game servers. But its over. we have no more cash.

  • Reality check time:

Net advertising will never work!! Everyone want's to mold their little section of the net into what they want. What have we learned? Net advertising is a pipe dream. Yahoo! maybe the only one that has successfully used advertising, but now their is talk of a buy out. Maybe all the time Yahoo has been nothing moree then hype.

Shit, sites that actually have products to sell you can't even make a buck from day one. Then how in the fuck do you think e-advertising will ever work?

This is one of the few times I bask in other people failures.

  • Remember when people did gaming sites for the fun of it?

    Here's the food chain:

    1. Game site started for the fun of it. "Hobby"
    2. Game site starts get mucho hits/attention.
    3. Bigger game site or Advertising firm gets venture capitol. Get the bright idea to make affiliate sites
    4. They eat up all the for fun sites.
    5. Site gets money to create more bandwidth, space, etc.
    6. Cuts are made, either bigger site is hurting or advertiser goes belly up.
    7. Game site is now left on their own to continue to pay for it's growth.
    8. R.I.P.

This situation sucks, I feel sorry for the sites that are getting affected by this. Because they can no longer do it for fun, it's too big. Plus they got a taste of money... Why do it free again?
