On The Gun I Hate To Love

by Steve Gibson, Jan 21, 2001 8:00am PST

Several people posted their own opinions on The Gun I Hate To Love last Thursday which was appreciated. Glad it sparked an interest by so many people. Here is one more rebuttal which is a bit more in depth. With a touch of condescension even!

  • I played Quake 1 like a mofo. Night and day I played that damn game. I loved Quake 1. Yes, the RL had big splash dmg and a really fast RoF, but none of the other weapons exactly sucked either. Quad dmg + super nailgun was pretty damn nasty, for example...

Quake 2 was crap in my mind. Sluggish controls, goofy theme, and, yes, the railgun. Q2 had some great mods tho, which I played a lot, but regular Q2 DM? No way. Nothing was more irritating than a wide open map and someone who was good with the RG. Spawn, die, spawn, die, etc. ad nauseum. Fuck it.

Q3 is better in terms of handling and speed and such, but goddamnit, the stupid RG is there. Honestly I hardly EVER play Q3... mainly because I find mindless DM pretty tired, but even when I am in the mood for DM I usually don't turn to Q3. Railgun = suck.

The shock rifle in UT is similar in terms of annoyance when there is a good shock whore in the map... but at least the shock combo takes *slightly* more skill to use. There are far less shock whores in UT than RG bitches in Q2/Q3. (Yes, obviously the RG does take skill to use, but it's a far less interesting weapon. instant hit + takes off almost all health = boring)
