Ah yes, we need a good old fashion debate around here huh? Well check this story out. (Thanks PC). Dr David Kessler of the US Food and Drug Administration has called for the American tobacco industry to be dismantled. He details a 5 year investigation into the tobacco industry conducted by the FDA which lead him to this conclusion.

... calling for cigarettes to only be sold to those who are already addicted to them. [...] Dr David Kessler says that as a business, the American tobacco industry should be dismantled and operate only as a strictly supervised supplier to "cigarette addicts".

  • It takes a long time to get lung cancer, heart desease, or emphesema from smoking in most cases (I would say an average of 25 years or so, but I can't be sure.) I do know that I smoked for 18 years, and I didn't get any of the evil side effects. Now, if it takes that long to get sick from directly inhaling a pack of cigs a day into my lungs, how fucking long must it take for second hand smoke to damage a person?

Second hand smoke is an irritation at most, and any other "proof" the AMA or anyone else has is propaganda, as well as utter and complete bullshit.

That's not to say I think that malls and such should allow smoking, because I don't believe that they should. If you smoke, you can damn sure smoke outside. I always did, even before there were smoking laws. It common courtesy.

  • i myself am split on the debate. on one hand, ciggarettes really should be banned/limited/whatever, for all of the reasons we're all too aware of. yet, how can we ban ciggarretes and yet still sell alcohol? while not as deadly (i dont think), the principle is still the same: it can greatly harm people, and companies make an assload off of it. but, in boozes defense, the addictiveness isnt nearly so bad; they say withdrawls from nicotine rival heroin (thats what i heard, anyway. i have trouble believing that myself). and another thing (!), if nicotine and alcohol are both legal, wtf is up with pot? legality as medicine everywhere should be a minimum.

in a positive note, here (St. John's, Newfoundland. Canada. up there, to the left. yeah, way over there) pot is legal as a medicine, and smoking has been banned from the major malls to within 15 meters of the main entrances. im glad i dont smoke :>
