Bad Press Reactions

by Jack Mathews, Aug 25, 1999 10:24pm PDT
Related Topics – id software, Quake 3 Arena

Reactions to the Ottawa Sun story from yesterday have cropped up all over my finger shack. Ok, actually, two people so far :) update by Steve: it looks like the article has been pulled. No word on why but probably that huge amount of email don't ya think? 3DRealms' Charlie Wiederhold

This story that several of the news pages linked (I first read it off of Blue) is simply too much to handle. I normally try to avoid the subject except in certain controlled forums as it just leads to frustration for everyone. However, I'd encourage anyone here who actually cares about getting some sort of honest reporting about this industry and our games to write this editor and point out the glaring problems in the article
id's Todd Hollenshead shows us the letter he wrote:
I'm sure you're getting a mountain of email from people angry about the number of factual inaccuracies in the story, so I'll just trust that you'll fix that tomorrow. I wanted to let you know that you can email me directly if you would like to fact check articles that discuss our games in the future. And if this hasn't been made painfully clear to you already, Grossman's contention that Quake III Arena has been pulled from the market is no more accurate than any of his other assertions about id Software or our games. We're looking forward to an enormously successful launch of Quake III Arena later this year. You can see what we're working on for yourself at http://www.quake3arena.com.

Kid killers linked to video games

    Arcades teaching violence: Army expert

    By ROB GRANATSTEIN, Sun News
HAMILTON -- Kid killer Michael Carneal, 14, fired eight shots
into a prayer circle and hit eight students in Paducah, Ky.

Never in the history of law enforcement has anyone shot with
such accuracy. Even the FBI\'s average hit ratio is only 20%.

\"He was playing a video game,\" retired Lt. Col. David Grossman
of the US Army told Canadian police chiefs here yesterday.
\"Only this game was for real.\"

He told Canada\'s top cops that society is facing a new breed of
killers nurtured on violent arcade games.

\"These video games are murder simulators -- we\'re training them
    to kill,\" he said.

\"These kids go on autopilot -- they\'re drilled to kill every living
target until they run out of bullets or targets.\"

Grossman said a game called Quake 3 was pulled from the
market recently because it allowed players to scan in pictures of
real people and then kill them.

Grossman is a West Point psychology professor who has
founded a new scientific field called \"killology\".

He said the worst video games are the ones that actually put
replica guns in the hands of children.

He\'s working with authorities to have age restrictions put on
    violent video games.

Jefferson County Sheriff John Stone said there was a definite link
between video games and the shooting at Columbine High
School in Littleton, Colo. that claimed the lives of 12 students, a
teacher and the two student shooters.

\"These guys played a game called Doom, which is a game where
you kill and hunt people down,\" said Stone. \"The difference is the
video games don\'t shoot back. We did.\"

Parents of the three kids killed by Carneal in December, 1997,
have launched a $130-million US lawsuit against several video
    game manufacturers.

They\'re also suing the makers of the movie The Basketball
Diaries in which a character blows away a bunch of kids.

  • First, does anyone have a copy of this article? I didn\'t get a chance to see it before it was pulled.

Second, I live in Toronto, where we have the Toronto Sun (same company as the Ottawa Sun). Let\'s just say (if it hasn\'t been said already) that the Sun is a cross between a real newspaper and a tabloid. If something sells papers, they\'ll print it. No questions asked. It is a rare day when the photograph on the front page doesn\'t have either blood or sex on it. If there\'s no real news that day, you can guarantee there will be scantily clad women on it. The Sun is most commonly read by blue-collar workers, or people who want to go through a newspaper in under 30 minutes.

Oh, and if you\'re looking for advertisments for strip joints, phone sex, etc, the Sun is the place to go... :)

  • Last night i copied and pasted 75 of the posts and e-mailed it saying \"look at how dumb ya look fool.... i\'m gona be supprised if you still have your shit hole job after this... if you were a real newspaper you wouldnt have an article on TRANSEXUALS on the next page.... thats just sick\"
and were up to 160 or so
And i hope they enjoy the messages from TODD H and that 3Drealms guy :) hehehe
such a pitty they removed the page.... i was gona bring it up and ask my gym teacher how accurate his gun aim was (yes folks, my gym teacher is an ex marine)

He would have gotten a good laugh at the stats...

Well shoot after playing CS for awhile now i guess i can take on a bunch of SEALs/HRTs when they come after my ass right? This guy is a media generated expert. Founded a new scientific field thats laughable. I think i\'ll found one today called \"moronology\" the study of idiots/morons/defects who crop up after media generated issues. Or \"drugology\" the study of why we drug our kids with prescription drugs for \"abnormalities\" which were considered normal at one time, then blame it on a game once they go and hose up a bunch of people. Prozac kills it\'s a fact. I urge congress to vote on a law to require a 5 day waiting period and background checks on prozac users. Only then can we protect the children. =)

  • I\'m originally from Toronto, Canada and FYI, the Sun chain of papers are well known for their tabloid-like sensationalist reporting. They\'re nothing more than right-wing authoritarians which claim to be newspapers but like to stick bikini-clad \"Sunshine Girls\" on page three--right in between the news of devastating earthquakes in Turkey and the latest bombing party in Iraq. They\'re not even credible and that story was particularly laughable. It was little more than a lazy string of quotes thrown together from all sorts of similarly lazy AP and CNN articles that have already run over the last few months. (The reporter even said Quake 3 was pulled from the marjket when in fact it hasn\'t even been released yet. He obviously didn\'t do any reporting at all. Complete lack of credibility, folks.) Actually, papers like the Sun revel in the suffering of others. It sells papers.
