Voodoo5 in 1st Half of 2000?

Chris Danford was watching a little bit of CNBC and apparently Greg Ballard, the CEO of 3dfx showed up on the old toob and had a few things to say about 3dfx. Interesting to note that 3dfx stock dropped through the floor yesterday btw. At any rate here is what Chris sent in: (update: Here is a realaudio version of the interview, thanks Tungsten)

... Even more interesting, Ballard talked about a new product in development for 1st Quarter 2000.  He said that this product has been in development for "more than 20 months" and that it will be "the best graphics product ever" (I think that was the exact wording - the interview went by quickly). Strangely, Ballard seemed much more excited about next year's product than the soon-to-be-released Voodoo4.   It's possible that Ballard's intentions were only to spark investor enthusiasm and promote 3dfx stock (as most companies do when given the chance to appear on CNBC).

  • #35 pretty much just summed T&L\'s current main advantage. T&L means I can run my K7-700 w/ a G400 MAX and a K6-2 400 w/ an NV10 pretty much equally on today\'s current games.
And #34 pretty much hit the head on the nail too.

All you people that think \"wow, because of T&L I\'ll be able to play all these great games coming out next year on my P2-400/K6-2 400\" are the same people that gave 3Dfx the idea that 32bpp texturing and textures over 256x256 aren\'t necesary. So instead of getting an awe inspiring video card we get a Voodoo 3 that\'s about as good as a one legged man in an ass kicking contest. Which I\'m sure they discovered wasn\'t the best move.. being a few million dollars short this year.

And if you\'re the same people encouraging Taco Bell to make more of those damn dog commercials, I\'m coming after you.

  • Everything now is pretty much happening like this:

Big company : \"Our <insert random item here> will own the future blah blah and be responsible for a new generation of blah.\"
    meanwhile
peons : \"Oh wow. Blah is going to release a blah and it\'ll be the best blah ever.\"

Then the Big Company releases ass and everyone\'s like \"what a crock\"
People are stupid and computer companies are really beginning to thrive off of it.

Just wait and see what happens. Stop trying to speculate what you can\'t remotely predict. (except #30, he\'s almost on the right track. Hardware T&L will be a great thing, however, to say that a P2-300 would be sufficient once a T&L card comes out is being ignorant. I hope two years from now games won\'t be able to run on a K7-700 because the game is so chock full of advancements).

  • Some people don\'t seem to grasp just how big an impact haveing T&L accelerated in hardware will have. With the other speed increases that become possible with the new .18 dye size (read 250+ Mhz at least) speed compaired with current TNT2 Ultras is potentialy 2X to 4X faster. Remeber how much faster rendering got with the VooDoo 1? We\'re going to see the same thing with T&L in hardware which will also make the NV10 close to compleatly independent of the CPU as far as graphics are concerned, and with the T&L unloaded off the CPU a P2-300 would be more than sufficient for any game in the forseeable future.

  • We have to remember, that the v3 was a letdown for the hard core gamers, which amounts to a HILL OF BEANS in the total market for video cards. Yes, we, the 1%-of-the-market hard core gamers are important to them (or so they want us to believe) but alot more people wanna check email and play trespasser (and kill them thar dinersaurs!) or Deer Hunter than play quake3 in 32 bit color.

And those people won\'t spend $250 for a TNT2U, but will probably spend the $90 for a V3 2000 which has kick-ass performance for that money. 3DFX knows this.
