Cyrix Returns
by Maarten Goldstein, Jan 05, 2001 7:26am PSTAnandTech has a review of the newest Cyrix CPU this morning. After several failed attempts to make anything that competes with AMD and Intel, VIA took over and produced the worlds first 0.15m x86 CPU. AnandTech benchmarked the new CPU, meant to compete with Durons and Celerons, in several applications and games (Quake3, MDK2 and Unreal Tournament). Is the latest effort from Cyrix any good for the price (700mhz for $56) ?
... With this in mind, we can only say that the third incarnation of the Cyrix III, the one based on the Samuel2 core, is destined to go the way of recent Cyrix products. In order for VIA to reach their goal of 10% market saturation, they will either have to drastically change the Cyrix III as it currently is or come out with a new product that is priced lower and performs better. The additional 64KB of L2 cache and the shrink to the 0.15 micron process do not seem to be not enough to save the Cyrix III from going the way of the dodo.Doh, wasted effort from VIA it seems. Too bad, extra competition would be good. Thanks Rosewood.

It doesn't seem that they'll have a chance selling the CPUs by themselves.
WARNING: Do not attempt to ressurect!
Thanks!

since i switched from atari to pc, i had an intel (486-33/66, p-100, p2-266) and now i got my first amd (ath-800).
too bad it doesn't look like i'm gonna get one either.
I think they should put a warning that the new Cyrix should not be overclocked because it will result in a melting of the polar ice caps.

I think Cyrix can still have a place in the market. If I remember right, those are the chips that power those Tiger Direct machines. Cheap, affordable and decent machines.
I think we have to remember that while gamers have some of the highest hardware requirements, we make up a very small portion of the computing world.
BTW, I didn't read the Anandtech article. Not in the mood for dissertations this morning.
