Gaming Networks Turmoil 2
by Steve Gibson, Jan 03, 2001 3:06am PSTThe emails have been pouring in and I've heard this first hand as well, CNET has decided to dissolve their website alliance. (Shades of the GameFan and GX shakeout?) Several large websites in the gaming market are/were a part of CNET. This includes Counter-Strike.net, , Crossroads, InsideMacGames, Stomped, GamersDepot, MSXBox, Unreal Universe, and many others. All of these websites were given their 30 day notice to find advertising (and in some cases, hosting) in order to stay afloat. The 'dotcom shakeout' is hitting closer and closer to home. Since people always ask, Shack is an affiliate member of UGO.com along with BluesNews and HardOCP among others. I do my own hosting. If for some reason something similar were to happen here the show will go on, even if I end up doing this for free.

another reason why sTeve == mad pimp
And yes, I couldn't get on the Shack a few hours ago either.
In terms of publishing, if you want to call it that, the real beauty of the Web is the seat-of-the-pants stuff and message boards. Every dot com out there could vanish tomorrow, and there'd still be someone hosting a goofy personal site or jabbering away on Usenet. Rely on speech -- it's never needed a businessman for anything. :)

I expect the dumbass Yahoo exect who came up with this idea to do an about-face when they begin to see the dollar effect of the mass exodus.
i hope the shack lives long
and rocks hard
That is, if Steve doesnt mind having to deal with Bill Gates running around the office building wearing only a diaper and a steel gauntlet yelling "Back to work, drones!"

Can we say webpagewarez?
If websites cant make money with a bazillion visitors theres something seriously wrong with the system. I dont care if advertisers pay like shit, there just has to be a way for a website makes money. I think its more like webmaster lazyness in doing anything productive.
"Uh you mean I have to do some real work?"

1. Sure if people can get it somewhere free, they will but what happens when they can't get it free?
2. I've heard from quite a few people that they will continue to offer their web sites for free. No digs at Steve however bandwidth and storage aren't cheap. Add that to the fact that the ones left will see their bandwidth usage swell. I can't see how anyone could afford it. Its one thing to run a hobby BBS (way back in the 80's) with several phone lines and $150 worth of bills a month. Its another to run a popular web site with 4 figure bills a month as a hobby. Most people's part time jobs aren't that good to cover than and a descent life style. (now if bandwidth gets cheap, I can see that falling away)
3. Several people have mentioned they are going to jump on free servers like homestead and geocities. How long will it be till they go under. Yahoo (the owner of several of these) is under presser from investers to start charging for them now.
4. Full page ads may work but they sever only to take up viewing time and limit the number of web sites one will view.

if you get a 'real' job, there's no way.
the first weeks it might work, but then you invest less and less time in it.
but what are we talking about that, the shack will always live on!
