Super Mario Maker 2 is all about making your own customized platforming experience. In this case, the game really does what it says on the tin. Beyond being able to create level layouts, add in objects or hazards, and so on, players can also make use of a number of set themes. In Super Mario Maker 2, these themes are called Game Styles, and they not only determine the look of a level, but also the types of elements that can be placed into it. Here's a look at each Game Style offered within Super Mario Maker 2's Course Maker mode.

There are currently five different Game Styles available within the Super Mario Maker 2 Course Maker mode:

  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Super Mario World
  • New Super Mario Bros. U
  • Super Mario 3D World

Players can choose any Game Style they like when creating a custom course by using the Game Style button found on the left-hand side of the screen within Course Maker.

Aside from affecting the visual theme, Game Styles also play into which items and abilities are available. It makes sense, considering that later Super Mario games introduced new elements that weren't found in previous releases.

Players will also note that there appears to be a missing style in the Game Styles menu. There's been a lot of speculation about what the empty space could be, with most players wondering if Super Mario Maker 2 will ever get extra game styles. We're inclined to think it will, but if Nintendo has plans to introduce new Game Styles, it's staying quiet about them for now.

For now, there are just five distinct Game Styles on offer within the Course Maker mode in Super Mario Maker 2. Players can use them to create an experience that hearkens back to their favorite era in Mario's history, and Nintendo may even be planning to introduce a new Game Style sometime down the line.
