Cheaper Pentium IIIs on Monday

From Ars Technica: Tomorrow Intel is slashin' PII and PIII prices as expected, but man, these cuts are deep!  The PIII 550 is dropping from that shockingly high $660 to a more modest $490.  More tantalizing, the seemingly overclockable PIII 450 will tune in at about $185.

  • Are you all stupid? I\'m not rich, but I assuming most of you have a p2 motherboard that can support a p3. 185 bux won\'t put a dent in your pocket, and hey -600mhz as a possibility? CRANK THAT BITCH. You are like guarunteed 504mhz, and 558 is not far from that. So if u wanna roll with the big boys, get the 450. Or just wait for an Athalon -which will also be cheap as hell by the time u scrounge up 185 bux. Its a good deal too hard to pass up. Think back to the 300A. The p3 450 will be sorely missed once its outta production.

And btw I can\'t wait for the day where AMD owns Intel. Their monopoly must be crushed. Everyone knows Intel is in it with Microsoft :)

  • Everybody wins except AMD, #7. We\'ve already seen what happens to their bottom line when Intel starts a price war. I wish them the best, but they have a tough fight in the market ahead of them.

To be honest, I\'m wondering what Intel is going to do in the speed thing if the K7 beats the up and coming coppermine. Remember that the Celeron A\'s were a response to K6-2. Not many saw Intel putting the cache on the die in their low end chip. They thought the Celeron was just a half hearted effort at the low margin low end market.

The ones that win in the near future are obviously the consumers, no matter what happens. Either prices will be low, or the tech bar will be raised.

  • I\'m sure your happy with the celeron :) hehe
and where\'d ya read there isnt any motherboards or chips?
cuz i saw alienwares photo of about 1000or so Athlons.. there\'s the chips.. the mother board... seen reviews of early revs of the boards...
and i\'m sure you\'ll like it when intel and amd go at it...
P3 prices and Celeron prices will go down while speed goes up
K7 prices will follow suit...then P3 prices and Celeron prices will go down while speed goes up
K7 prices will follow suit... ya see the picture?.... lower prices for every one..hence cheaper pc\'s....
EVERY ONE WINS! (even though the k7(athlon still beats a p3))
    Cheap Pc\'s for every one..
