Team Arena FPS Fix
by Maarten Goldstein, Nov 26, 2000 7:18pm PSTRobert Duffy has some good news for all of you experiencing framerate problems with the Team Arena demo. The problem has been fixed. Thanks Alexander Gawlick.
At this point I think we have the FPS issue resolved, a couple of things were going on. With everything turned on, TA may run a few FPS slower but it should not be significant. In many cases it is now running as fast or faster with Q3A maps. We are going to do some more testing and tweaking this evening and tomorrow but the final point release and retail TA should not see these issues.

**Sigh**
Kerbuffel is chanting the "I-don't-want-to-pay-for-this-id-should-give-it-away-free" mantra that we've seen since the day we announced the project. About the only original thing is that he's been allowed to collect them all into one long rant and been given a straight man to play them off.
If you'r someone who has already decided that you don't like teamplay on Q3A, then Team Arena isn't likely to be a conversion experience for you. Don't buy it. But don't complain when your warez copy doesn't allow you to play online either.

In my not so humble opinion I would have to partially agree with GodSucks. Everyone here seems to claim that they started with Doom through Q3 and they know but I doubt it is true. Usually I can tell who I am wasting my time with when they say "Q2 rocked". If you played QW and were good at it the sudden drop in speed of gameplay would be annoying. It made me think "Boy id didn't have a clue as to what made your heart pound in 1v1 QW matches". 1v1 QW I was almost at the point of shaking. You needed to be real fast in movement, shots and weapon switches.
Now with Q3 its better than Q2 (thank god), the weapon balance is nice. The maps get a thumb down. Honestly an "Ultimate Deathmatch" game that has only 3 maps played in 1v1 tournaments. As a sequel coupled with id's own hype, more is expected of Q3. The single player maps for Q1 were a blast for QW ffa. Big enough for 10 ppl and lots to choose from. Q3 ffa maps are cramped causing a great deal of spam (be honest guys its true. No BS). The maps also lack mood and atmosphere. I was really disapointed with the artists work. A lot of them look so multicolored and there appears to be no theme or colorscheme to the maps. Some of them incredibly basic.
I think the biggest factor in determining a wether a game is good or not for most people is wether they are good at it. For me Q3 was an exercise in frustration with the predicition code while on modem. I like the game x2 as much now I have cable I'm not shooting through people. The most basic and most important thrill of any Quake game is being able to own or outsmart the other guy. And I believe that is why people utter such insanities as "Q2 rocked". I am fairly badass now I have cable and thus I like Q3 much more. HOWEVER let it be made known that I think Q3 is a good game, but there is no doubt in my mind that it is a shitty sequel. A good sequel takes the good of the previous improves it then adds more new great ideas.

I meant Q3 goes no deeper then " Wow look at all the pretty colors, shaders". But once you look past all that the overall "effort" in making the "Ultimate Deathmatch Game" has failed. Hell, we aren't even getting more teamplay options till now, as a commercial add-on!
I would rather look at the Q3 engine over the Q1 engine any day, but I just can't look past the dumbed down game play.
Thank you.
