We're All Gonna Die!
by Maarten Goldstein, Nov 20, 2000 10:42am PSTAnd it's robots this time. There's a story on ZDNet about how robots have been the cause for at least five deaths this year. With the robots becoming more intelligent - and in a few dozen years even human-like intelligence and reasoning, and are even in some cases able to replicate other robots, they can become more of a threat. Even if they don't kill you, they will probably take over your job. Fuckers. See here for a new small robot by Honda that walks like a human. Thanks xvdl.

When I was working at _________ Chemicals, I remember reading a monthly safety journal that would showcase an accident every month. One in particular caught my attention. It occured at a Ontario plastic injection moulding facility (not of the same company that I worked at).
Anyways, there was an injection moulding machine, where the plastic to be moulded would be moved in by conveyor, the machine would close, and the process would occur. Well, something jammed up around the time of the lunch break. The supervisor wanted some regular guy to go in and fix it, but the guy wouldn't, since the supervisor wanted him to do it in a hurry, without engaging the safety lockouts and securing the machine. So the supervisor climbed in. Unknown to him, infared lasers would detect when a new object was inserted and close the machine automatically. Within 1/4 second he was compressed by a force of around 5 tons to a thickness of 1/2 inch, and then his, umm, remains were pushed down the conveyor by the arms in the machine.
Rather sick and gruesome, but as it's been said, safety is no accident.

Build your own robot, program it and send it to Steve. The best robot will update the Shack for Steve and the winner will have his own EVENING READING (the robot not the guy of course :)

"One of the most familiar robots in our culture is R2-D2. Until recently, this cinemabot was run from inside by pint-sized actor Kenny Baker. But this year, in the ultimate irony, George Lucas replaced Baker with a computer."
too bad that was only a rumour, and has already been dismissed by the LucasArts camp.
doesn't anyone check their articles for facts anymore?

A robot news story must never be written without the sentence "They're coming..." somewhere in the first 10 words; alternatively, the first sentence can be "Get ready for the robots."
A robot news story must never fail to warn readers that their jobs will soon be taken by robots, while omitting to mention that most reporters' jobs long ago were filled by robots.
In terms of cliches, stupid prognostications, and sheer ignorance, a robot news story should be indistinguishable from a story about politics, a field colonized by space aliens who have so far been successful disguising themselves with the same haircut.
if someone can find a clip of it, linx0r it here
at least until the patch comes out

Just like computers were going to take over everybodies jobs?
They sure did, I mean, we'd all be doing such interesting stuff right now if it weren't for computers stealing our jobs right?
