Yahoo Considering Charging

by Maarten Goldstein, Nov 18, 2000 12:30pm PST

Looks like not everything on Yahoo will be free in the future. They're pondering charging for some of the more popular parts of the website, as ad income might not be the future with so many of the dot-com companies closing now that they are collectively running out of money. Some services, like additions to the Yahoo Mail service already cost money but they are considering charging for content too. They know it's hard to convince people to pay for content on the Internet though. Another problem is that most of Yahoo's content is from 3rd parties, so for them to be anything special they would have to create their own, something they don't want to do. Would you consider paying for content online?

  • Pay for Yahoo? Heh. Please, tell me another one. We won't even pay for Napster, and Napster is actually of some small use. Unfortunately for the dot coms who are desperately hoping to start charging, the ethos of the Internet is summed up in one word. Gimme. As in: gimme, now!

But this ethos was actually encouraged by the dot coms' own ludicrous business model. For several years, the premise was: give away services for free, coast as the stock price multiplied wildly on a tide of speculation, and then, somehow, someday, figure out how to generate revenue. Now, at last, the money's drying up. The stock's going down. Every speculative bubble bursts, sooner or later. :)
