Intel Claws Harder

The Pentium4 is going to be launched next Monday, and contrary to popular Intel methods is going to be actually available in very large volumes. In fact Intel is going to push the chip hardcore and plan to make more P4 chips than P3 chips by early next year. It looks like Intel is betting the farm on this chip being good. What is also interesting is Intel is finally going to competitive again with pricing against AMD

The Pentium 4, operating at 1.4 gigahertz, will cost about $625, and the 1.5 gigahertz version will cost about $795, according to personal-computer makers, the paper said. AMD's 1.2 gigahertz Athlon chip costs $612, it added.
We'll see some in depth benchmarks and write-ups next Monday and all will be told. If the thing is fast I'm sold, havent upgraded the old compute here for quite a while. :)

  • Personally i think brand loyalty is dumb. Right now, I have an Athlon, and i love it to death. Before my athlon, i had a Celeron, and at that time it owned and i thought that amd's products totatlly sucked ass (which at the time was the k6, and imo, it did). AMD came out w/ the athlon, i saw what it could do, so i ditched intel in favor of AMD. Now, the P4 is coming out, and while my experience w/ my athlon has been great, im not goint to let that stop me from getting a P4 if it indeed turns out to be a better product. As things stand right now, im a little partial to AMD due to my satisfaction of my current chip, but if they cant put out a competitive product the next time i upgrade, i'll make no hesitation in dropping them for intel. mind you this does work both ways as well (hence my current chip is an AMD product) This applies to the whole 3dfx/nvidia situation too -- now im quite partial to nvidia, and right now w/ out any question nvidia is tops, but if 3dfx were to put out a better product, i wouldnt think twice about switching over.

  • Blah. Until they come out with the Celeron III or whatever it'll be called, the P4 will be yet another waste-of-money I won't buy. A few years ago I bought a Celeron 300a for about $100 that (at 450) performed every bit as good as a $400+ PII. Just recently I bought a Duron 600 for $50 that matches (at 900) $200+ Athlons and $300+ P3's. It's nice to see the dollar gap closing, but I think there's room for one more generation with a serious performance vs. value marketing differential, which will allow me to get loads of speed for pennies on the dollar.
