Who knows what Quantum3D might do with this: there's a petition to get Quantum to release the 4-way SLI based card to retail. This for people who were planning to buy a Voodoo5 6000. Saw that on Stomped.

  • For Quantum to try to continue to pour money into this technology to try to make a retail product would be even MORE foolish than all the money 3dfx has poured into it already. The board is rife with technical "hurdles" that stemmed a good share from the fact that it was a sensitive architecture that would need to support MANY hardware configurations in order to go retail.

Quantum's advantage is that they will build SYSTEMS with the V5-6K tech, so they can spec out the exact configuration for the card to run nice and stable without worries of strange chip incompatibilities and whatnot.

  • I would have bought a 5500 if it were only faster. Plain and simple. 3dfx just has some pooooooooor judgement/execution. Had they used the widely available .18u process and given the VSA-100 a DDR memory interface (7ns DDR is dirt cheap), the 5500 would have been a KILLER board that had the legs to carry 3dfx into rampage. As it is the next 6-9 months are going to be similar to last year's Nov-April. Current geforce2's can be had for $160. GeForce2 Ultra's will fall in price as competition heats up between the various vendors (you can already get ultra's for under $387). And to weather this 3dfx has only the 5500. Not good.
