Intel Clawing Back
by Steve Gibson, Nov 14, 2000 5:55am PSTWell, the party couldnt last forever. It looks like AMD has had to delay the release of their 1.5GHz Athlon chip and things arent going perfect anymore for them, this just a few days after completely canning their Mustang chip. You couple that with the point that Intel looks to be 'way ahead of schedule' with their Pentium4 chip and Intel is gonna finally take the lead again.
AMD also bumped back its schedule for desktop chips. A 1.5-GHz version of Athlon for desktops won't hit the market until mid-2001, rather than in the first quarter, as originally expected. At that time, rival Intel will be preparing a 2-GHz version of the Pentium 4.2GHz P4s in 2 months? Yeesh.. and its not just Register saying this anymore.. :)

Even here the general consensus is that the P4 is not worth the money by a long shot. Sure it's fast But for the cost of the chip, you could be an entire 1ghz Athlon rig.
I'm not a die hard AMD fan, I just go for the most bang for the buck, and that title currently resides in the AMD camp!

HOpefully they work, but every now and again I'll get cross-platform incompatibilities. Despite that, using Visual C++ to design and debug your program is infinitedly faster and easier than solely using a Telnet session with the school.
The PIV is all about RPM revs and not raw horsepower. AMD is the reverse.
But the one thing I don't like about the PIV is that you are going to have to buy a new PSU--I'm not certain if Intel is canning the aged 'ATX' case design, but you are DEFINATELY going to need a new Willy-certified PSU before you can make your upgrade.
Well that and 384-512MB of ram will probably cost the same as 20-year mortgage... I need a lot of ram to do program testing and coding using Visual C++.

1 window for telnet (to connect to the school)
1 window for dos prompt (for testing running programs)
1 ftp window (to connect to the school)
1 or 2 explorer windows open to move files around
2 notepads open to edit text files
1 visual C++
1 any other apps (like netscape and ICQ).
That'll run my 256MB of memory down pretty low. Esp if I try to run anything else. I'll probably go to 384MB around Xmas and maybe 512 next summer (if I can afford it).

Go'n Buy this monster for 1600$ !
I'll play the next 2 years on my 200 + GF-DDR and when Doom ships I'll buy a 8GHZ CPU for 700$ and a Geforce10 QDR ;)
Why the hell do you need such a monster ?? Doom 3 will be releases sometime between Dec 2002 and Dec 2003. The most impressive games in the next months (Return to castle W., TWINE and C&C 3) are designed for 500+ and Geforce systems (not C&C).
Great, a 2ghz Chip will come out, how much do you think that puppy will cost, and from the onset, it's only going to support RDRam. That just adds to the price tag. By that time the 1.2ghz AMD's will be about $200, if that. That's where the real value will be!
I just don't see this as exciting news for the average consumer, except that AMD will mostly likely reduce prices even further.

sorry... someone was bound to do it...
Anyway, Go Intel! As much as I like AMD (they power my PC now), I'd like Intel to continue to be strong. I personally have nothing against them.
