WWDC 2018: Apple Announces ARKit 2, Focusing On Shared Multiplayer AR Environments

A new file format will supplement the new update to Apple's AR platform.

During the WWDC 2018 Apple keynote address, Apple introduced iOS 12. The new update will have the largest base when it goes live, able to work on all devices currently capable of running iOS 11. One of the key focuses of iOS 12 is AR integration and experiences, thus, the company introduced ARkit 2. ARkit is Apple's foundation for augmented reality experiences and the following features are the focus in this new update:

  • Improved face tracking
  • Realistic rendering
  • 3D object detection
  • Persistent experiences
  • Shared experiences

Apple also introduced USDZ, the new compact, single-file format that is optimized for sharing AR. USDZ. Developers and consumers will be able to place 3D objects into the real world using the open file format. Apple is working with the leading companies for 3D tools and libraries for USDZ. Adobe is all in. A way to deliver AR across Apple platforms.
